"You know you really didn't have to come." Maddie said as they pulled up to her new school.
"I wanted to make sure you were going to be alright." Jay said, turning off the car.
"I'll be fine." Maddie said, grabbing her bag that was sat at her feet.
"I'm not sure if I'll be able to pick you up afterwards." Jay said, checking his phone.
"I will get the bus to the precinct if you're not here." Maddie said as they both got out of the car and headed towards the school reception.
"How may I help you?" The receptionist asked she was a kind looking woman probably in her late 40s.
"My names Maddie Gerwitz, it's my first day." Maddie said, readjusting the backpack that sat on her leather jacket.
"The new girl." The receptionist said to herself before spinning in her chair and grabbing a few pieces of paper. "Your timetable, locker number and combination." She said handing the papers to Maddie. "The principle has asked someone to show you around, she should be here in a minute, if you want to take a seat." She added.
"You go to work." Maddie said as Jay checked his phone.
"You sure?" He asked Maddie nodded. "Its the same case from yesterday. Looks like it'll so you'll probably have to get the bus."
"That's fine." Maddie said, reading over her timetable. "Tell Ruzek to leave the hard work until I get there." She added with a smile.
"Oh, I think he was planning to anyway." Jay said with a smile. He left Maddie sat in the reception waiting for the girl who was going to show her around. Maddie had been to that many schools that first days didn't really bother her anymore, she knew the girl coming to show her around would be a 'popular' girl who would end up bullying her anyway.
"Hi Miss." A student said to the receptionist, snapping Maddie from her thoughts. "Mr Wilson asked me to show the new girl around." She said, Maddie stood up as the receptionist nodded towards her. This girl was not what she had been used to. She seemed bubbly and a bit crazy, she wore light blue jeans and a flowy purple top under a khaki coat. "Hi, I'm Rebecca but everyone calls me Becca." She introduced herself.
"Maddie, short for Madison." Maddie said with a smile.
"You might be the first new student they've asked me to show around who isn't going to get dress coded on the first day." Becca said. Maddie smiled, it wasn't her first time at a new school and she had learnt long ago not to be dress coded on the first day so she had chosen to wear black jeans with a slightly oversized light grey hoodie and trainers.
"You show a lot of new students around?" Maddie asked.
"Yeah, most of them end up leaving or becoming a 'popular girl'." Becca said.
"I doubt that'll be me." Maddie said.
"Can I see your timetable?" Becca asked, Maddie gave it to her. "You're in most of my lessons, but history and computer science are near each other anyway." Becca said, handing it back.
----------
"So are you getting the bus?" Becca asked as the bell went signalling the end of the day.
"Yeah, are you?" Maddie asked, over the day Maddie had grown to like Becca and her little group of friends, despite them not being the type of people she would normally hang around with.
"Yeah." Becca said.
"Thank God because I have no clue which stop I'm meant to be getting off at." Maddie said with a smirk.
"Where about do you live?" Becca asked.
"An apartment on 32nd but I'm actually going to the 21st police district." Maddie said, waiting for a reaction.
"Are your foster parents cops?" Becca asked, for some reason Maddie had expected a negative reaction but she was beginning to realise Becca was the least negative person on the planet.
"Yeah." Maddie said. "It's just my foster dad, I don't have a foster mum." She corrected. Becca knew she was in the foster system as she had been quizzed by her friends at lunch.
----------
"How was the first day?" Platt asked Maddie when she walked into the precinct.
"Better than usual." Maddie said with a smile as Platt buzzed her up.
"I would love to ask you how the first day was but Voight is breathing down our neck to get an ID on this victim." Burgess said as soon as she saw Maddie coming up the stairs.
"What've you got to work with?" Maddie asked, dropping her school bag next to her desk and loading up her laptop.
"Not a lot." Ruzek said, handing her a picture taken of the body by the ME. "I've tried missing persons, criminal databases. Nothing." He said.
"Have you got an estimated age?" She asked.
"The ME thinks between 20 and 30." Ruzek said.
"You guys really do need me." Maddie said as a drivers licence came up on her screen.
"You got an ID?" Ruzek asked, not believing this girl had done it in a few seconds whilst he had been trying for the majority of the day.
"Cassandra Ford." Maddie read.
"How?" Ruzek asked, walking over to her computer and looking at her screen.
"Drivers licence." She said like he was stupid.
"Sarge." Ruzek said, walking across the room and knocking on Voight's door. "We got an ID on the vic from earlier."
"We!" Maddie shouted, not letting him take credit for it.
"Maddie got an ID." Ruzek corrected.
"And an address?" Voight asked, Adam nodded. "Take Burgess and check it out."
