I was so tired I could hardly see straight. I had just gotten fired from my second job and spent all of last night searching for another job. I tidied up behind the counter. A faint ding informed me that a customer was in the store.

He was handsome, medium height, with light brown skin, dark brown hair, and chocolate friendly eyes. He looked around my age, and his black glasses gently rested on his face.

I put on a fake, but friendly smile and met him at the counter. "Good morning." I tried to sound cheerful, but I felt ready to pass out. "What would you like today?"

He had a sweet and friendly smile, "Just uh regular coffee." He said slightly awkwardly. "To be honest, I don't really get coffee that much."

I quickly got his coffee, trying my hardest not to make any mistakes. He seemed sweet I didn't want to mess up his coffee, that and my manager is extremely strict. Any complaint from a costumer could make him freak.

"Alright done!" I said cheerfully as I handed him the cup, he payed me and threw some money into my tip jar.

"Thanks!" He say down in our little shop, right by the window. He started to work on his computer, with one earbud in.

Right away I went to work, trying to keep myself busy to stop myself from falling asleep. I was cleaning the counter when I accidentally knocked off a jar of coffee beans. It landed with a loud crash and splattered all over the floor. Filling the newly cleaned ground with some of our nicest coffee beans.

My manager was good at venting out his anger on employees, and I guess last night was pretty bad because he had been on edge all morning. He stormed out with fire in his eyes. "What the hell!?" He screamed, making me flinch slightly. "Are you kidding me?" His voice was sharp.

"I-I'm sorry! It was-"

"Don't give me your bullshit excuses!" I guess he didn't realize that there was a costumer, that or he didn't care. He always yelled at me, normally carful to avoid costumes.

Out of the corner of my eyes I saw the boy from before get up and walk over while my boss roared insults and profanities at me.

"Dude, calm down." He sounded so calm, but I could hear a tinge of anger.

"Don't tell me you're defending this worthless pile of shit." He laughed. "25 and working at a shitty coffee place just to get by!" He said laughing, I was close to mentioning that he was the owner of this shitty coffee place but the man came behind the counter and stood beside me.

I was short so I needed to look up slightly to see him. I was only 5'3.

"Leave her alone, she didn't even do anything that bad." He seemed much less patient now.

I tugged on his sleeve gently, like a child "Y-You don't have to defend me." I must've sounded so timid, and small. My throat felt tight.

He looked down at my and smiled warmly, he was a stranger but he made me feel so safe.. "Dont worry about it."

My boss crossed his arms, obviously angered that he was being confronted about his misbehavior. "Fine. Your fired. I'm tired of you, you're a bullshit employee, and if you are gonna use a costumer to defend your actions I don't want you." He growled, I froze as I heard his words.

"Y-You can't fire me!" I stammered back.

"Oh I can't?" He said raining and eyebrow. "Watch me." And with that he stormed to the back of the building.

I threw off my apron, tossing it into the shards of broken glass, I could feel tears burning in my eyes. The man that defended me was still by my side with a sympathetic look. He offered a faint smile, "you'll find a much better place than this don't worry."

I was choking back tears, to scared to say anything, because if I did I knew tears would pour out, and I would say something I regret. So I just nodded.

He put his arm around my shoulder gently, I flinched slightly but softened with his touch. "Let's get out of here alright?"

I nodded slightly. "I'm Daniel, call me Danny."

"Ray." He replied back, as he took his arm off me, I wanted Rays arm back around my shoulder. He felt so warm. He gathered his stuff and I grabbed my bag and we left, creating small talk as we wandered in no particular direction.
