The signs for this dreaded dance are everywhere. Every corner I turn seems to have the brightly colored banners and flyers.
'Join us at the Spring Formal!'
I hate it. So many guys have asked me it's not even funny. Most people would die to be considered the prettiest girl in the grade. Those people can have the title if they want. I was cursed with this natural beauty. I constantly find myself becoming jealous of the girls who have acne on their faces, or who have crooked teeth. There is nothing wrong with me. My teeth are straight and pearly white. My hair never has a bad day. My face loves me and hasn't broken out since eighth grade. I don't have any weird birthmarks or scars blemishing me.
And I hate it. This curse brought on the hordes of men asking me to accompany them to the dance. Speaking of, I notice a crowd of jocks approaching. Captain of the baseball team, Jace Franks, is the only jock who hasn't asked me to the dance yet. Since he is the center of the approaching swarm, I quickly turn down the nearest hallway. My best friend, Katie, is just going to have to understand why I'm late to meeting her at her locker.
"Hey, Devyn! Hold up!"
I hear his shoes slapping the tile as he jogs to catch up with me. I quicken my pace to no avail. He slows to a walk as soon as he is standing next to me.
"Hey, beauty."
"Go away, Jace."
"Just give me a chance to speak. That's all I'm asking."
Getting agitated quickly, I get right down to the point.
"I'm not going to the dance with you."
"Damn, girl. I wasn't even asking that but go off I guess."
Now he's using my catch phrase against me? Hell no.
I stop abruptly and he takes a few steps before backtracking and looking me in my eyes.
"What could you possibly want?"
He gives me the best attempt at a seductive look he can muster.
"Devyn, will you go to the dance with me?"
I roll my eyes and storm away. The nerve of these morons!
"Wait!"
He comes running up beside me again.
"Is that a yes?"
"NO!"
