"Just go to school." I whispered from behind her. "Tell Gina and Nance that I'll either be late or I'm not showing up. Tell them something came up with my parents, they'll understand."

She had been glancing behind her shoulder to see what I was talking about, but turned her head back to smirk at me.

"I'm a gentleman, as if I'd leave in the middle of courting you. Who do you think I am?" She winked, pulling the corner of her mouth up into that wickedly charming smile of hers.

"Please don't do anything crazy."

"Sorry, doll. I can't help my crazy." She turned completely around, blocking me. "Don't go anywhere, okay?"

"I.. You.." I shook my head with a smile, even as reluctant as I was. "If you want me to stay.. I'll stay."

Her eyes narrowed as she locked gazes with the spawn queen herself, but she smiled anyway. "Yo, Margot." She unenthusiastically greeted her as she approached. "What can I do you for?"

"I don't want to talk to you, Clay girl. I want to talk to that." I knew she was talking about me.

"But you're talking to me, pipsqueak." She leaned down to her face. "And now you're not, so fûck off."

"Let's get one thing straight, Clay girl." She got dangerously close. "I'm not stupid enough to start shit with someone of your caliber at the Grove, but don't push me. I'm known to be reckless for a reason."

"Aha!" Gwen seemed genuinely excited. "Me too!" She did a quick extension of her arm.

Before I knew it, I was peering to the side of her to see a now yelling Margot, holding her face.

Ohhhh, you punched her.. I see.

"You punched her!" I tapped her shoulder as if she hadn't seen it herself, laughing at how Margot stumbled backward.

"That I did, doll face. Wanna step back a bit, they're not going to be too happy about it."

And before I could say anything back to her, she knocked me out of the way, getting tackled by three girls.

"No!" I tried to push one of them off, but it to no avail. The one I tried to push, April, started to charge at me. "Stop! I don't want to fight you!"

"What's so good about being around you?" April smirked, reaching back her right fist. "Everyone always wants to be around you."

I knew she was speaking from her own experience. At one point, April kissed me. And now that she was closely knitted to Margot. Well, you know how that goes.

I took a glance over at Gwen and she was now standing, laughing at the other two crawling along the floor. She turned, eyes wide and threw her hand out as if to catch something. Or rather.. stop it.

One moment, April was ready to land me a slugger to my face. I blinked, and she was thrown amongst the already beaten duo that was much closer to Gwen.

We all paused for a moment to stare. Eyes all making a trail up to the source of what the hell just happened.

She had been frozen solid, staring at her hands. And it felt as though hours passed before she looked up to meet my unbelieving gaze.

"Gw.. Gwen.." I couldn't get my hands to stop shaking, but I put them up cautiously and started to approach her.

She took a stiff step back, her eyes unlike any look I'd ever seen. In a sad, strange way.. they'd reminded me of my own at that moment.

"I'm.. sorry.." Her voice sounded so small, so.. unlike her. "Go to home for the day." She told me, nodding toward the cowering girl's who'd started to run off. And with that ran off herself.

"Don't.." I tried, but she was already gone before I could even blink again. "..go."
