Sunshine would have liked her next action to have been logical, but it wasn't. Instead of simply avoiding the redhead, or walking after him, or even calling after him, instead of all of those perfectly reasonable options Sunshine opted for a far more logical plan of action... She ran after Fred Weasley and they met at the bottom of the stairs where the small girl launched herself at the unsuspecting Weasley, knocking them both to the ground.
Fred, in an unsurprisingly dazed state, stared at the Welsh girl that was sprawled on top of him. Instinctively his arms wrapped around her as their eyes connected, but he knew better and began to remove his arms from her.
"Stop," Sunshine whispered, her hand touching his arm, "I want to stay like this, I like it."
Too shocked to argue Fred's arms didn't move anymore as their eyes pierced into one another's and as Sunshine began to lean in she remembered the Yule Ball, remembered Fred's hurt expression. She felt inadequate, and suddenly, as the Weasley's lips were about to touch her's, the confident girl sprang up and ran back to the kitchen to finish breakfast.
Sunshine leant against the worktop as her heart rate slowly returned to normal, at least, she thought it was returning to normal, and it was until Fred walked into the room. he had his hands behind his back and he was looking directly at her.
"I'm sorry." the Weasley said, never taking his eyes off of her as he took a few steps towards her.
"What?" Sunshine pushed herself away from the worktop, looking at the man in front of her. She didn't understand. Why was he apologising? Wasn't it her that had hurt him?
"I'm sorry I've been ignoring you, I'm sorry I ruined the ball," he closed much of the space between them as he trapped her between his body and the worktop, "I'm not sorry I pulled that Durmstrang off of you."
"I'm sorry I yelled at you." Sunshine whispered, her breath hitching due to the close proximity between the two. She wondered if he could see that her heart rate had risen again, or that she couldn't quite breathe when he was so close. After his angry confession of love, she hoped he would kiss her, or at least do something.
"Friends again?" her heart sank; she had known it was foolish to think he'd ask, but she was still hopeful.
"Y-yes. Friends." she couldn't look him in the eye, so she didn't, she stared at the ground, biting back tears.
Neither of them said another word; Fred just took a few steps back and left the kitchen. He didn't look back and that seemed to be it for him, to him their friendship was fixed; to her, their friendship was even more broken and complicated now.
The next few days involved the two sharing niceties but nothing more and the others in the house could see the tension and unsaid words between the two. One evening, when the families were sat eating their dinner, which Sunshine had cooked, Molly Weasley finally snapped and stood up.
"Fred and Sunshine!" she snapped at the two teenagers who had been stealing glances at each other for the previous forty minutes, "Go into the hallway, and do not return until you have sorted yourselves out." In shame the Weasley boy rose from his chair and left the room, closely followed by a blushing welsh girl.
Once in the hallway she turned to him, "Hi Fred."
"Hi Sunshine." he didn't look at her, he just sort of looked around, avoiding her gaze.
"So..." she began, not sure what to say next.
"So?" came the reply, he still wasn't looking at her, instead his eyes were fixed on something above them. Sunshine's own eyes drifted upwards, widening a little when she saw the mistletoe she'd unknowingly been stood under.
She looked back at the Weasley boy, a faint blush on her cheeks as she took a step closer. Her hand reached up to cup his cheek and his eyes darted down to her.
"Mistletoe." he smirked at her, the troublemaker that had seemed to have disappeared over the last few days had reappeared and she grinned at him.
She nodded, whispering "Yes, mistl-" she didn't get a chance to finish the word because Fred had leaned down, connecting their lips and successfully shutting her up.
His arms wrapped around her, holding her in place as she stood, shocked at his sudden change of heart - not that she minded said change of heart. She felt safe now she was in Fred's arms, safe, protected and loved.
Well... That was until George rounded the corner and made the mistletoe explode, causing rainbow powder to cover the two lovebirds. Although short-lived, and soon followed by chasing a laughing George down a corridor, Fred and Sunshine's kiss had solidified what they already knew they wanted: each other.
