I frown at the sound of the door slam and look out the window just out of curiosity, he isn't there. My eyebrows scrunch together,'Where did he go?' then I remember his speed and turn back to the sink to wash my soapy hands. The hot water makes my skin sear with heat and my hand pulls back quickly, I grab the hand towel and dry my hands, the pain going away slowly.
Traveling to the T.V. I sit on the small couch and cover myself in the warm blankets I had piled on the cushions before sitting. Two hours fly by watching a movie I liked when I was only a few years younger, it wasn't as thrilling now as it was then.
When the door bell rang. I quickly pull down my hair and straighten it best to my ability and rush to the door with a blanket wrapped around me tightly. "I'm coming!" I yell tripping over the ends of the long blanket.
I finally get to the door and open the squeaky door and make a mental note to oil it before I can register who it is. It takes me a minute but I recognize her as the woman that stopped me in the parking lot,...Mrs...Mrs. Sanders! that's it.
"Mrs. Sanders, right?" I ask to clarify just in case.
"Yes dear, I came by to see how you were fairing," she says and I nod.
"It's going well, I-" I'm cut off by the sound of toenails sliding and scratching against the wood floors, I look back to see Cody running towards us, his tongue lolling out the side of his mouth in a big dog like grin.
Before he can jump on her I grab him and pick him up while he wiggles in my hands, I can keep from laughing at him and Mrs. Sanders looks on with laughter in her eyes. "I'm sorry, let me put him out in the back yard, come in," I tell her and she nods.
I set Cody on the back steps and he eagerly runs out excited to play in and muddy up the white slush that fell and continues to fall every once and a while. I make my way back into the living room to see my vistor has found my pictures that line the shelves on the walls I have framing the shape of the walls in the corner. "This your family?" she asks and I nod, but then remember she is facing away from me,"Yes,"
"Come in the kitchen, let me make you something to drink," I say and she nods,"Thank you,"
"Do you want anything in particular?" I ask the woman and she shakes her head kindly.
"No dear, what ever you are making for yourself is fine,"
I get the hot chocolate in the two cups I pulled down and bring them over to the table Mrs. Sanders had helped herself to. "So, how can I help you Mrs. Sanders?" I ask enjoying the company of someone other than the T.V.
"Yes Audrey, actually I came to talk to you about the boy I told you about." My heart drops, she heard about that? "Someone told me that you had been talking to him in close range, he's dangerous I told you those things for a reason," she says in a no longer friendly voice, like she was chastising me.
I purposely huff, amused. "I can talk to who ever I want, thank you. Aiden isn't a monster, alright? He's a person just like us," I tell her forcefully and stand, "Now I think it's best if you leave,"
Mrs. Sanders' eyes narrow at me,"Yes, I have some things to attend to anyways," she sees herself out. I secretly wish the door would hit her on the way out, I know it's mean and rude, but I won't stand her scrutinizing Aiden with no proof that he was the one in fault. I watch her go out the door and narrow my eyes as she gets into her little car and drive out the only way to come in.
