Lights Off!

We all got ready for bed in our dormitories. I sat on my bed as a boy walked to me.

"Hello, you must be the new kid. Stephans' the name."

"Charlie Dawson."

"Can I call you Charles?"

"No, just Charlie."

He nodded as we shook hands.

"That boy over there, we call him Peanuts."

"Hi," Peanuts said.

Mick was brushing his teeth. He was gargling his rinse water.

"Come on Travis, stop showing off," Stephans said.

He spit out his water and got in bed. I heard someone shouting to prepare for inspection. Rowntree and his Whips walked in.

"Good evening," Rowntree said.

Stephans nodded. The Whips were walking around inspecting. One of the Whips walked to Mick.

"Your hair is still long, get it cut."

He walked away, Mick flipped him off. I smiled for a second. The Whip noticed me after I stopped smiling.

"Dawson, gain some weight for Christ sake."

They walked back to the front of the room.

"Otherwise, very good Stephans. Lights out in thirty seconds. Good night."

Rowntree walked away.

"No talking."

The rest walked away but one stopped.

"Travis!"

They walked away. Mick started sarcastically clapping.

"Jolly jolly good Stephans."

We joined in.

"Jolly jolly good Stephans! Jolly good!" Johnny said.

"Oh Jolly jolly good Stephans, jolly jolly good," Wallace said.

I laughed, Stephans spoke.

"You four better watch it."

"Don't push us Stephans, the day's coming," Johnny said.

"What day?"

"One night we're gonna massacre you Stephans, I'll do it for free," Wallace said.

"Lights out!" The Whips shouted.

The lights were out.

"Stephans, whatever you're doing now, don't," Mick said.

"Quiet," said a voice.

Mick continued.

"Hey Peanuts...Peanuts, is it true you've become a Buddhist?"

"What?"

"Christ, don't you know Buddhists believe in being immoral? They worship sex!"

"You mean Hindus? Hindus worship sex."

"Shut up, go to sleep," Wallace said.

One last thing was said.

"Paradise is for the blessed, not for the sex obsessed."

We went to sleep.
