Sweet, So Sweet

That night, T and I didn’t have our honeymoon, given that it would be pretty awkward since I was over six months pregnant. But bright and early in the morning, he got a text from Travie reminding him that we had to leave.

It was 6:05 AM when he got the text. T rolled over on the bed tiredly and sighed.

“I wish we could stay here together. It could just be you, me, and the baby.” He said, rubbing my large stomach when he said baby.

“I wish that, too. But we have to go home. I have to see about my family. I don’t know if they’ve moved already, or where they plan on moving to.” I said. I was really worried. My mother acted like she really did think Daddy was going to kill her. I don’t know where my father is, but hopefully my mother was brave enough to call the police and get him arrested.

“So let’s get dressed then.” T took my hand and kissed the ring that he bought me, and I smiled. I still couldn’t believe that Michael Stevenson was my husband.

We got out of bed and looked for something in our temporary closets to wear, giggling as we made jokes to each other. I felt so happy. It was like everything was just flowing the right way. I hoped that it would last throughout the day.

By 12:00 PM, we were back in California, and 30 minutes later we were in Westside LA. I was scared to go to the house. If my mother wasn’t there, and there was no note telling me where she would be, I don’t know what I’d do. I would most likely cry, and hope that I would be able to find out where she moved to.

And hope that my father didn’t find her first.

Finally, we were standing in front of the house. I ran up the stairs as fast as I could and opened the door. Then I smelled it, that familiar, warm smell—the smell of hot porridge on the stove. It was my Mama’s favorite thing to eat at this time.

I ran further into the house to see Keron sitting at the kitchen table with a spoon of porridge in his mouth. I grabbed it out of his mouth and hugged him as tight as I could.

“I love you so much, even though you can be an idiot sometimes.” I said to him.

“Whatever, Jaydi.” He replied. I knew he wanted to say it back though.

“Where’s Mama?” I asked.

“I’m back here!” Mama said from the back of the house. I noticed that all the furniture was back. I walked to the back of the house and into the bedroom that Mama was in. She was finishing up a conversation on the phone when I walked in.

“Okay, detective. Thank you for that information. I will. Bye.” She was saying. Then she hung up the phone and went to give me a hug. I embraced her gladly.

“Who was that on the phone?” I asked her when we ended the hug. She smiled brighter than she’d ever smiled before.

“It’s going to be okay, Jaydi. He’s going to prison. I had a friend from college, and I told her I was moving and I told her it was because your father had threatened me. But I hadn’t remembered she was a police officer. If I knew that, I wouldn’t have told her. But it was fate that I told her that—because the next day she and her other friends from the police station arrested him. She says he might get 30 years to life in prison!” She explained happily.

I was thrilled for our family that we weren’t in danger anymore, but I somewhere deep inside I wasn’t so happy. I don’t know what I was feeling; I couldn’t find the name for the feeling. But I just realized that it was the first time I had met my father, and in the same week he was being sentenced for thirty years in prison. Yes, he had raped many girls. But it still would’ve been nice to experience what it felt like to have a father.
