It all started off as a normal night in the Johnson house in the year of 3030. There was a family in the Johnson house. The parents of the house (Eliza and Tony) were scientists; Cassidy and Jack were their children. Eliza and Tony had a dark secret. Something no one had ever been able to master. Until now, the adults had been finalising their work for years. The mischievous scientists have been making a portal to travel through dimensions.

You see, their portal was recently discovered and they were accused, by the Government, for illegally experimenting on animals. The animals would be used by the two scientists to teleport to places. Unfortunately every time they sent an animal into the portal, the animal would not come back into the lab. Their theory was that the animals were sucked into another dimension that no one had ever seen or discovered before. From this they started experimenting with other objects, to see if anything would return, of course nothing did.

The machines were set up in such a way that the object being teleported would go from one end of the room to the other in a split second. However they would always end up losing the animal or object. By this they knew that if anyone discovered them they would get into deep trouble but they kept going at it, they knew they were close to a break through. They kept going and going and worked harder and harder; they would stay up all night on rotation but also stayed awake during the day so their children wouldn't get suspicious. They did all of this in their basement below their house.

After they were finished with their long night of unsuccessful adjustment, they went up the stairs of the basement, only to find Cassidy, their eldest (17), standing on the top step of the stairs looking down with shock evident on her face. Surprised.

They stared at each other for a few seconds before Eliza started speaking in a hushed voice, being careful not to wake Jack "Cassie, I need you to be honest with me here, did you hear what we were discussing?" Cassie stands there unmoving but only after a few seconds; she slowly and unsurely nods her head. This time Tony asks her quietly but sternly, "this is for your own safety dear, answer with your voice and everything is going to be okay."

"Yes, I did hear what you were saying and, yes I will not tell anyone about what I have just heard, not even Jack. But can I see the portal, please?" answered Cassie in a small voice with her head hung low.

As she utters the last of her words she looks up with a twinkle in her eyes, her eyes were filled with hope.

"No, you cannot set an eye on what we were discussing and you are certainly not allowed to go down there from now on. You hear me?" Tony says firmly. Tony and Cassie held eye contact for a few seconds, before Eliza brought them out of their haze.

"OK, now up to bed with you" Eliza gently said to not only Cassidy but to herself and her husband.

The next evening she found that her parents were going on a date to an upmarket party where famous scientists would gather every six months to discuss plans moving forward. Cassidy knew she shouldnt, but the portal down there she had to see it! And she'd already heard the worst of what happened, right? She stepped onto the first stair to the basement, it made a loud creak, alerting Jack to her whereabouts.

Cassidy barely ventured down there - she didnt know these stairs like she did in the house. Between the ground and first floor, she could identify every major creak, and could sneak past her unsuspecting parents quite easily to get something from the fridge, past her bedtime. But here was a different story, and she silently thanked her dad for persuading her mum to take a night off, and go to this gathering.

As her bare feet hit the cold floor of the basement, she instantly felt anxiety well up inside her chest, but she didnt want to turn back now - she had suffered weeks of anticipation to see it up close. Cassidy kept her feet moving, slow like an invisible force was pulling her back; it was like wading through water... but she pushed on, determined to see it. First she saw nothing but dusty boxes and giant cobwebs, as she started to walk closer to the back of the room, she noticed that about six of the floorboards were loose, she walked towards them. When she reached the floorboards; she stepped forward as she thought that the boards could hold her weight but the boards produced a huge creak and gave way beneath her. She expected to just fall just a few centimetres, but she found that she fell at least five feet until her feet made contact with the surprisingly warm floor of the unknown underground room, underneath the basement.

As she stood up a searing pain shot up her leg; the pain was so bad that she had to lean on the nearest object to her for support. When the pain had finally subsided, she started to observe her surroundings.

There were papers covering every surface, there were a plethora of wires in every corner of the room. Something caught her eye. It was huge and round, it had wires hanging out of it, wires of all different colours, Cassie then noticed that one wire in particular was connected to a huge, round, white button. Cassie was a huge fan of Science- Fiction movies and stories; she recalled that she had read loads about scientist labs, just like this one in the books she read.

Cassie slowly limped towards the huge, round archway in the center of the lab, she noticed that every step she took to move forward, her hair would blow around more and more. She reached the machine and started to inspect it with a watchful eye. She stepped forward once more and lost her balance, she fell to the floor with a thump; then she noticed that she was slowly being sucked into the machine, she grabbed for the nearest object which was, thankfully, a return pad. The force was so strong that she couldn't escape, she gave up. She closed her eyes when she was so close that her hair started to blow in her face even more aggressively than before. She felt everything stop, she could hear herself. She could hear the flapping of wings. She couldnt feel anything.
