Brooke's Pov
I could hear Jenni's laugh every time the nurse or doctor said Ochman. I was just trying to process the fact that I apparently had a husband and that I could leave for a week. A week! What am I going to do for a week?! Colby wasn't helping himself at all because every time they would say Ochman his face would go red. Honestly, I too was going red. I was also finding this very entertaining. After a while of the doctor or nurse talking to us, they leave. As soon as they leave I groan, throwing my head back to be extra dramatic.
"I don't want to stay for a week!" I say annoyed.
"Hey, don't worry, you can sleep for a month." Colby says, trying to assure me.
"Oh, I won't." I say, looking him dead in the eyes, "not with you here Mr Ochman."
Colby face goes red and he tries his best to hide it, but it was easy to see.
"So, how long do you have to stay?" Jenni comes in grabbing her car keys.
"A week." I say, sticking my bottom lip out like a child.
"Okay, cowboys hoodie, marine life books, sweat pants, and an extra hoodie, as well as your NASA shirt?" Jenni asks, raising one eyebrow.
"Correct!" I say, happy.
"Alright, see you two in like... two hours?" Jenni says, unsure how long she'll be gone for. She looks at Jake to make sure that's she's right, but Jake just shrugs. Jenni rolls her eyes and starts to leave.
"Don't forget to bring the cowboys hoddie!" I call out to her as she leaves the room.
"I will!" She says, popping her head through the door then closing it behind her.
I laugh at her joke and shake my head. I then turn to look at Colby to see him frowning.
"You okay?" I ask in curiosity.
"What are the cowboys?" He asks frowning a little deeper.
"Oh my god... they are the best Football team of all time! You uncultured swine!" I say loudly.
"Jesus..." Colby says, his eyes wide.
"Okay, so we have a sport called Football Rugby League. It's a cool sport to watch, Jenni played it once upon a time. The cowboys are my favourite team and storm is Jenni's favourite." I explain, making sure that he understands.
"Oh... I've played it in New Zealand." He says. "Well, I wasn't in the team, but I learnt a few things."
"Oh really?" I ask.
"Yea," he says, nodding. "Um... also, who is storm?"
"Melbourne storm." I simply reply.
Colby just nods and then before I knew it we started to talk about football.Jenni's pov
As I got into the car I felt Jake's stare stuck on me.
"What?" I ask, looking up at him.
"What the cowboys?" He asks.
"A football team." I say like it explained everything.
"Oh... is that in Australia?" He asks me.
"Yea, it's a good team, but when the best team players retire..." I ask, put the keys in the ignition "it's not so good. I'd rather proffer the Melbourne Storm team honestly."
Jake nods understanding... well I hope he understood.
"So, what other teams are there?" He asks me.
"Umm... there is: the Brisbane Broncos; Newcastle Knights; Sydney Roosters; Sydney Rabbitohs; New Zealand Warriors; Canterbury Bulldogs; Wests Tigers; and North Queensland Cowboys." I tell him, surprisingly remembering nearly all the teams, as I drove. "Those are the only ones I remember."
"That's a lot of teams." He says, shocked.
"Trust me, there are a lot more. They are just the big leagues." I say, laughing as I stop at a traffic light.
"How many more?" He asks, interested.
"About five more that I missed." I say, looking at him. "There is a lot of youth leagues."
"Did you ever play?"
I go silent as I remember the adrenaline rushing throw my blood as I ran down the field, getting a few meters before a girl came and talked me. I felt no pain... well, until the next day. My team wasn't a team... they acted like individuals.
"Yea..." I finally reply, pushing on the gas as the light changes to green. "My first team wasn't really a good team to play with. It was two different clubs that hated each other. I hated playing with that team. It was just drama."
"Did you score at any time?"
"Nearly..." I say, "I got the ball and I ran... faster than I've ever ran before... I ran about two meters away from the left sideline. I got some good meters until a girl tackled me, also coat hanging me. I didn't feel any pain. Nothing, but the adrenaline. I wanted to run more, to get the ball more, I wanted to score... but I was always on the wing with no ball. I had potential. But, I stopped playing with that greedy team. They were never really a team. Every team we played against could see that."
"Is this a touchy subject?" Jake asks, noticing how upset I got. "Because we can change it."
"Sorry... I just... they were just all bitches." I say, laughing. "Do you have any more questions?"
"No." Jake says shrugging his shoulders.
I look over and I don't see him with his seat belt on.
"Put your seat belt on." I say, hitting him lightly on the shoulder as I turn my attention to the road ahead of me.
"You're no fun." Jake whines putting the seat belt on.
"I am fun!" I say back.
"Highly doubt it." Jake says, challenging me.
"Dick." I say, not taking my eyes off the road.
"Yea I have one." He says.
My cheeks burn up as I realise that I walked straight into that one. Jake laughs at my reaction as I continue to drive.
"Where did you get that scare that's on your hand?" Jake asks, once he finished his laughing fit.
"Uh... I accidentally cut myself on something a few years back." I say, quickly.
"It doesn't really look like it was an accident." Jake says, the amusement long gone from his voice.
"I don't really want to talk about it." I say.
"Okay." Jake says, the radio filling the silence as it played my playlist from my phone.
I hear the song 'I love you goodbye' by Elton Castee start to play. I start to hum the chorus, tapping on the steering wheel.
"One random Tuesday night, one swipe right, girl looking like a snack asked her if I could get a bite. Went out once to get dinner it was great, ton of laughs, do I like this girl? I might." I sing along to the song, remembering the lyrics. I see out of the corner of my eye Jake stare at me surprised. "Single date turned twice, thrice, then a number beyond sight. On the same page, same pace, same strokes, from different folks, read my mind, line for line. Were the same you would write. We go out in the town, obnoxious, weird, loud and proud. I catch your eyes and the whole world would fade from focus... time would stand still. Connection made of stone, my diamond so precious. Foolish and infatuated was our modus operandi. Thought about you every day, not one slipped by. How could we know the plans of the universe? One day we'd both be saying three words. Two months, a few emotional bumps..." I continue to sing my heart out, singing all the words, not forgetting one.
Once I finished the first verse I looked over at Jake to see him recording on his phone and camera.
"Oh my god!" I say my eyes wide, "where did you get that camera? Did you like pull it out of your ass while I was singing?"
Jake laughs as I keep looking at the road and Jake.
"You're a good singer!" He says, trying to boast my confidence.
"Don't lie to me!" I say, hitting him lightly. "Now where did you get the camera?"
"I brought with me!" He says, laughing.
"Why?" I ask, focusing on the road again.
"I don't know, but I got this." Jake says, gesturing to the recordings.
"I hate you." I say, smiling and shaking my head.
"You love me." He says, smiling widely.
"You wish." I joke with Jake and we both laugh with each other.
After a while of driving, we finally arrive to Brooke and I's house.
"And we're here." I say, pulling into the drive way.
I put the car in park and I turn the car off. I then turn my attention to Jake to see him fast asleep curled up into a ball. I stare at him, taking in every feature of his face. From the pink hair to the sharp jawline. I lean over, and I play with his hair a little before caressing his cheek.
"Jake, wake up." I say softly.
Jake's eyes slowly open as I take my hand away from his face. He stretches out his arms and legs in the car. Looks at me with tired eyes and gives me a lazy smile, which I return with a bright smile. I get out of the car and start to walk towards the front door. I look over my shoulder to see Jake in the car staring at me.
"are you coming in?" I call out to him, snapping him out of his trance.
"Yea." He says, his checks going red as he gets out of the car.
I smile and unlock the door, opening it to see a small body of fur inside, just lying down in front of the door, doing nothing.
