'YOU CAN'T CHANGE THE REALITY'
The house is a frenzy right now. There are servants running about cleaning every nook and corner of the house and I'm currently running behind them supervising them. At the same time I'm also checking on Maa. She sometimes acts careless towards her medicine and she knows better than to do that. She's now seated on the couch in the living room. I walk towards the living whilst tying my long waist length hair in a messy bun.
"Maa!" I call out to her while she quickly gulps the medicine down her throat. I shake my head and smile, she's one adorable woman I must say.
"Haa, I had my tablets don't worry. And come sit next to me!" I grin at her antics and take a seat next to her.
"See, this is the album I adore of Sanjeevini." I look at the album placed on her lap. There's a beautiful photo of Sanjeevini aunty clad in a regal lehenga.
"This picture was taken on her wedding. She's beautiful, isn't she?" I nod smiling. She really is beautiful. But what relationship does maa have with her
"I know what you're thinking. Sanjeevini is my best friends daughter. She was a Gupta before she married kishore. Now she's a mother of two handsome boys. I'm her god mother, so after sudha died she visits here" She narrates. Her eyes glisten with happiness. She must be way too special for her. Her contagious smile gets to me and I smile along with her.
"Maa mein kaam poora kar doon. There's lots to do" I hurry up and stand where as she pulls me back.
"chup karke baith jaa. Actually go get oil from my room. Look at your hair, it's grown so dull and rough" I Huff out and drag myself to get some oil from her room. After the oil session maa gave me, I meet up with raj outside the study
"di could you please help me with trigonometry?" I slap my hand on my forehead and gesture him to enter the study. Once he is seated opposite to me I begin
"you know the beginnings of trigonometry so I'll move on to the standard angles alright" I start teaching him all the tricks and simple methods so he could understand them. It's quite funny how he is concerned about Trig so much. It's a pretty fun chapter to be honest.
It's been 3 hours and Raj still wants me to keep going with the subject. This is the most amount of time he has given to studies.
"Ok for today this is enough alright. Go play for sometime. It's still 8" I say looking at my watch to be certain. He walks out with me and I head to the kitchen. Around this time bhai will be in his study stressing about stuff that he shouldn't stress.
"Bhai, coffee" I say and gently placed it on a coaster. He acknowledged my presence and resumes his work.
"Hmm need any help" He looks up and then places the file he was going through in front of me.
"cross check please" He says placing his hand under his chin, his elbows resting on the worn out wood table of his. I pull out a pencil from his pens stand and start going through the file. After a while I look up to see bhai staring at me.
"What?" I ask pulling out the pencil out of my mouth. I have a very bad habit of chewing pens or pencils while concentrating.
"You know I'll always be there for you right?" I look at him and draw my eyes together.
"why all of a sudden this confession?" I ask him with a hint of humour which he clear didn't catch.
"You are my little sister. And you'll land yourself a job in a beautiful place but don't forget that any problem and your bhai will always be there for you. I promise" He speaks with such honesty that tears prick my eyes.
"But bhai you can't change the reality now, can you? How many ever times you tell society that I'm your sister they will never respect me the way they respect. I'll always be looked down at as a maid's daughter who was abandoned" He huffs out a sigh.
"I still keep my promise Ruhi. And don't be so hard on yourself." I hand him back his file and silently nod. I look at the time to see the clock has struck 9. I spent an hour cross checking bhai's file. Wow!
"Good night bhai" I mumble and move out if the study.
I walk towards my room and plan on reading book and sleeping early. That surely did happen. Tomorrow is going to be hectic with the Malhotras coming and along with that my marks arriving early!
