Long ago, there lived a King by name "Bhimasena" who ruled the kingdom of Sourashtra, in the eastern part of India. He was very generous and compassionate towards his subject. People were very happy under his rule. He lost his queen quite early due to her prolonged illness. Since then, he became both mother and father to his elder daughter "Devayani" and younger son "Dharmasena". He took personal care of them inspite of his highly swamped up routine. He was of the opinion that the best gift he could ever give his people in his lifetime is by giving them a very humble and caring, people oriented prince and princess.

Dharmasena and Devayani grew up under the love and care of father. Devayani was a beautiful girl with long hair and black eyes. Bhimasena started the search for a suitable groom for his lovely daughter when she turned sixteen. After considerable search for about an year, he found the perfect groom, "Kumaravarma", the prince of Kashi,  for his daughter. Kumaravarma was a handsome, brave and kindhearted person, just the combination Bhimasena was looking for. He fell in love with Devayani at the very first sight. Their marriage was a very lavish affair  and a sight to watch. Lot of wealth was given to Devayani in terms of silk clothes, jewelry, horses and elephants, as a symbol of Bhimasena's prosperity. Devayani and Kumaravarma gave birth to a beautiful prince an year later who was named "Ravikirana".

On the other hand, Dharmasena grew up as a handsome young prince who was a mirror image of his father in terms of attitude. He was tall and well built and had bright brown eyes like his mother. He was well versed in Archery and sword fighting. He loved to tame wild elephants. He was trained in administration, accounts, spirituality and all those aspects of humanity a King should possess. He loved his sister Devayani very much and his separation from sister after her marriage had disturbed him quite a lot. Bhimasena observed this and thought to talk to his son.

It was a bright sunny morning. Both father and son were in the dining hall having break fast. Bhimasena saw his son completely engrossed in thought seeing Devayani's chair. He said,

"Dear Dharma, how are you these days? Are you still missing your sister"? Hearing this, the son said,

"Oh yes father! the chair reminds me of our childhood memories", mildly wiping the tiny tear on his cheek.

"I get it. But you must realize one thing son. Like all girls, she also has to have a family and give priority to that. She has her duties to perform and so do you. I'm thinking of handing over the kingdom and throne to you", father said.

It was too much information for Dharmasena to handle. He took a moment to assimilate what was said and then asked perplexed, "why suddenly this decision"?

"It is not a sudden decision my dear. You are sixteen now and have completed all the formal education. Moreover, if I retire early, I can see you ruling my kingdom with pride. I shall still be beside you as an adviser whenever you need me. I've invited your sister and brother in-law for the swearing in ceremony of yours next week", said King Bhimasena.

"So the decision has already been made"? asked Dharmasena worried if his father has made a hasty decision.

"Yes"!! smirked the father.
