It's been a week since I have had my full body scan. Thankfully, the cancer is only in my lungs, and not spread everywhere.
I wake up really early, the ice has finally melted and the flowers are starting to bloom. I walk down to the kitchen before anyone else wakes up.
I turn up the heat on the stove, and pull a carton of eggs out of the fridge. I scrambled the eggs and fried some bacon, I grab a cup and pour some orange juice. I sit down on the bar stool in the living room, facing into the kitchen. I sit and eat in silence. As I clean off my dishes and load them into the dishwasher, Jaeger emerges from her room. Her hair in complete disarray, and tired eyes drooping.
"That's smells good. Can you make me some?" I end up making break for everyone in the house.
"Hey Mom, can I make some more breakfast and bring it up to the hospital?"
"Yeah, why?" She puts her dirty dishes into the dishwasher.
"Well, that girl that I met a few weeks ago, I feel like she would enjoy food that's not hospital stuff." She smiles at me, and places her hand on my head.
"Yeah, let's do that, that's a good idea."
With in an hour, I am setting a plate on Josie's side table. She is still asleep, so I just sit in a chair next to a desk. Its around nine thirty in the morning.
After a few minutes of staring at the wall she starts to wake up. She rolls over and reaches for the plate of food I brought her.
"Let's me get that for you." She looks up at me with a confused and scared look in her eyes. I smile at her and bring the plate over to her bed.
"Thanks." She ate the eggs so quickly I thought she was going to choke. "Where'd you get this?" She said in between bites as she finished the food.
I could feel the heat in my cheeks as I reply, "Well, I didn't have any money to buy you anything for breakfast, so I made it myself." She looks down at the food then back up at me. "I knew you would hate it." I stare at the floor, cursing myself for thinking of this stupid idea.
She sits up straighter, "No, Landry, it's really good. I'm just confused why you made me breakfast."
A smile pushes it's way on to my face, "Because we're friends." I take her plate from her and slip it into my backpack.
"Friends?" She looks at me like the thought terrifies her.
I open my mouth to respond, but the door is thrown open, "Landry, are you finished? Oh, hello dear." I look over at Mom and give her a look saying that she needed to leave.
"Hi." I look over at Josie who looks confused to see a random woman barge into her room.
I guess I should introduce them. "Oh, Josie, this is my mom." I stand up at the same time Josie does, she looks down and realises that she is still wearing her PJs. She runs into the bathroom and comes back out a few minutes later, dressed with her hair up.
"It's very nice to meet you Mrs. Reuben." They shake hands, Mom grabs Josie's hand in both of her hands.
"Call me Lexi dear."
"I'm Josie Dodger." The smile at each other.
"Oh, why don't I give you our number so you and Landry can get together." She starts dining through her purse, looking for a pen and paper.
I pull her hand out of the bag, "Mom, don't overwhelm her."
"Oh pity, I guess we better be going anyways. Goodbye Josie." She waves to Josie as I push her out of the room.
