Twenty Seven: Pulling The Plug

           Two weeks later

"I said no!" she said, silencing the phone and almost throwing it against the wall.

"They won't stop calling?"

A grey mustached man entered the room, bringing in with him two steaming cups of what seemed to be coffee.

He handed one to her.

Her rugged face welcomingly breathed in the warm, stinging smell of the dark, bitter liquid. The drink she'd once hated with so much vigour had now become her best friend and the one most constant thing in life; at least for the past few bleak days. That didn't mean she liked its flavour.

Coffee and Marvin.

May had had her reservations about Marvin since the moment her helped her onto the wheelchair she now barely used. But ever since then he'd acted like a kind-hearted man and taken care of her and even her brother.

She had just sent Jason home.

They had talked a lot in the days that followed her recovery. There was only one thing she hadn't told him about. The guilt eating at her didn't allow it. And if anything happened to Ryan-

Her train of thought was cut short by the entrance of the doctor from the IC unit's hospital room.

Dr. Aditya Patel looked wretched. That would probably because he was watching the life slowly seep out of his best friend. He ran his hand through his unkept brown hair. His sunflower eyes had dulled into a murky brown.

May felt like giving him a hug. He looked so sad. More despicable than she felt inside.

Alverez had suggested him the second they got to the hospital. Jason had retrieved the number from Ryan's phone and called him. After some explanation Dr. Patel had showed up; pale but ready to do anything to get his friend back.

"Hey,"

"How is he?" She asked, "Please tell me you have good news,"

"I'm sorry May, but I don't have good news,"

She jumped up, almost spilling the scorching contents of her mug onto her lap. A few big drops managed to get to the floor though.

She barely noticed.

Her heart sank. The days of unattained rest started catching on her. Her knees gave way and she would have slumped to the floor if the doctor had not caught a hold of her arms. Her left shoulder was still sensitive.

Her phone began ringing again.

Well, actually Ryan's phone. God knows how they got a hold of his number.

Bloody, stupid-

She picked up. "Can't you bloody see that he's going through a horrible time?!"

"We just want information on how he's doing Miss." There was shuffling on the other side, "he's one of the biggest car manufacturers in the world, the public deserve to know. So you say 'he's going through a horrible time,' and how would you describe that?"

"You bloody-"

But the phone was wrenched out of her grasp.

"I'm sorry, but this is no longer an available contact to Mr. Hart," Aditya said before turning off the phone and pulling out it's battery. He turned to May. "Why didn't you just do that?"
