"So is it true?!" Tiffany bounded up to me in the hallway on monday.
"Is what true?" I ask as I walk down the hallway on the way to lunch.
"You and Carter! Are you guys like a thing? You skipped school together on friday and then show up to a party together friday night all touchy-feely and disappear! Leaving me there by the way." she frowned at the end of her statement.
"Sorry about that...but I don't really know." And the truth is, I didn't. I couldn't call me and Carter a 'thing' because techically we'd only made out a few times and I wans't sure if we were even friends.
"Well say whatever you like but I know he's into you. You can tell."
I stopped in my tracks, "You can?" maybe he wasn't using me...
"Yup. The way he looks at you, its really adorable. And you're the only girl he's gotten with since he moved here, and with his looks he could get any girl he wanted." I caught Tiffany looking down the hallway, subconciously licking her top lip with her tounge.
"Tiff, you're drooling." she snaps out of her trance and blushes self conciously. I look to where she was staring and see Carter by his locker. A sneaky grin crosses my lips and I tell Tiffany I'll see her later.
I prance over to his locker, careful he doesn't see me. I tap him lightly on his far shoulder and when he turns to see who tapped him I slide in front of his locker from the other side.
"Not exactly how I intended for you to get into this position, but okay." Carter said when he realized it was me. He placed one of his arms on the side of my head and kissed me lightly and I held his face in my hands, loving the way his lips tasted.
But I had something to ask him, and I had to before I lost my nerve. "Carter, what are we?"
He looked taken back by my question and removed his arm, but still stayed close to me. "I don't know, I mean we're not dating...but uh..." he scratched the back of his neck.
"We're nothing, right? I mean this is just a fun thing but we're never going to become anything." I say, suddenly feeling my words were too strong.
I saw a slight flash of disapointment in his eyes but then it disappeared completely as if it had never been there and he nodded his head. "Yeah, this is strictly fun. It can end whenever we want."
"Okay, good. Nothing serious. And we can see other people, no problem, in case you..."
"Nothing serious. And yes of course, you too." he confirmed, and we both nodded our head while awkwardly avoiding each others eye contact.
I snuck a glance at him, bitting my lip and saw him staring at my neck. I blushed self conciously as my hand flew to cover up the trail of hickeys I knew were there.
"Did I give you those?" he asked, his eyes wide but slightly amused.
"Yes!" I hissed, "I thought I had covered them up good enough, I would have gotten killed if my mom saw them."
"Well, they're almost gone." he said, tracing along them with a small half smirk on his face.
I rolled my eyes and pushed him away lightly, taking his hand, "Come on, lets get to lunch."
When we walked in, people gave us stares when they saw us holding hands and walking together, but I tried to ignore them as best as possible. I waved to Tiffany across the lunchroom who was sitting with Johnny who I guess was her boyfriend, and some of his friends, like Paul. I rolled my eyes and looked away when he looked towards us and furrowed his brow. I liked that he looked, and I didn't care that Tiff sat with him, he wasn't anything special to me anymore, or at least that's what I tried to convince myself of.
We grabbed our lunch at sat down at Carter's lunch table with Dan, Max, Simon, and a few other people I didn't recognize, a girl in particular who kept checking Carter out and trying to get his attention. He kept holding my hand though, and when we sat down he moved his arm to around my waist.
"Sooo, how was everyone's weekend?" I asked as I started eating.
Dan smirked and looked at us, "I didn't hear from Carter all weekend, I'm supposing you kept him busy?" he raised his eyebrow, leaning forward and challenging me to answer.
I leaned forward and saw a gleam in his eyes, "I'm not that easy. But I keep him on his toes." I leaned back to continue eating and he did the same. I loved Dan, as a friend of course, but he was the perfect guy to have around all the time to make everything fun.
I finished up the day and closed my locker, remembering I was meeting up with Carter outside to drive him home. I still found it funny how he hadn't gotten his license, wasn't the guy supposed to do all the driving?
I waiting outside the building for about ten minutes before I saw him coming out one of the building doors.
"There you are! I've been waiting for-" I stopped when I saw him walking with someone. I squinted and my heart sunk, realizing it was Candice, the girl form the party. She had the same small figure and her dark black hair hung in the same pin straight way it had that night when she yelled at me for being with Carter.
You could tell she was flirting like crazy, but I couldn't tell if he was genuinely interested or just faking it. He walked over towards where I was and when he looked up and saw me his face turned a shade paler.
"Hey...sorry it took me so long, Candice stopped at my locker." I glanced between the two of them, seeing an embarrassed look on his face and a triumphant look on hers. I plastered on a smile, not wanting to let the girl think she'd won.
"No worries, but can we get going? I've got a ton of work I have to do." I say, turning towards where my car was parked. I didn't look back, but I assumed Carter said goodbye to Candice and followed me, because I listened closely for the sound of a kiss but heard nothing, just the faint goodbyes and feet running after me.
I opened up the drivers door and let the smile drop from my face instantly, not needing to hide all the hatred I was feeling.
"Look, Payton, it's nothing really..." Carter started, but I held my hand up signalling him to stop.
"It's not my business. I mean it's not like we're together, right? We just agreed today that we could see other people whenever we wanted, and you deserve to have fun." I say a little too quickly and rushed, forcing the words to come out in fear that I would snap.
I pulled out of the lot and could feel the thick tension in the car. It stayed like that until I pulled into my driveway, when he grabbed my hand in his and turned me to face him with the other.
"She's nothing, really. If you don't want me to, I won't" I saw a small hint of sympathy in his eyes, but just shook my head.
"No. Don't let me stop you. We should end this so we both can move on." I say, unsure if that's what I really wanted.
A small flash of disappointment flashed across his eyes but he nodded, pulling his hands away from me and getting out of the car.
I leaned my head back on the seat and exhaled, already feeling the regret of what I had just agreed to.
