Chapter 9-Reunion

Kate's POV

There were whispers. It was like background noise when the symphony is warming up. Quiet, unobtrusive, just there.

I felt like I had been hit by a car. The only thing that reassured me that I was not dead was the light touch from the back of someone's hand that I felt on my forehead. Then there was a voice.

"Katie? If you can hear me, open your eyes. Just let me know you're okay, alright?"

My eyes shot open. I hadn't been called that in 9 years and some odd months. I sat up like I was possessed. And immediately regret that. The whole room started spinning and I grabbed onto what was evidently the couch.

Once my vision became less blurred, and the ringing in my ears stopped, I peered over at the figure sitting at the opposite end of the furniture.

"What the hell happened to you?"

He sighed, as if he knew this was coming. He brought his eyes up to face mine, and began to tell the story. All the while, Rose watched him intently, but not in an "I'm checking you out because I think you're hot" sort of way, but "I can't believe this happened and I actually care" way.

Evidently, he had run away, and had not been kidnapped. He was found by a young couple who couldn't have kids, and they kept him when they couldn't find his real family. He had told them that his last name was Johnson. Not Harper.

When his explanation had been given, he sat there waiting, waiting, waiting.

I should have been angry, furious, betrayed. He left me. With them.

But I had the last remaining member of my family sitting before me.

I threw myself across the couch, wrapped my arms around him, and started crying.

"I missed you so much."

"I missed you too. More than you know."

"And I thought you were dead!"

"But I'm here now."

"Thank god."

Turns out, he lived about twenty minutes away. He had contacted "the witch" after finding out that mom and dad were gone, and wanted to know where I was. Begrudgingly, "it" told him.

He went to SMU on a scholarship and got a degree in psychology. (He was always smart, and it really bugged me, because he never had to try.) Apparently his time with mental parents had driven him to help others with the same problems.

I looked over at Will while Landon got me up to speed on his life. I gave him a watery smile. He returned it with a very feeble one.

Landon noticed this. "Yeah, by the way, would you care to explain what you're doing here? I got an interesting explanation from your godmother, but it sounded kind of crazy..."

"What did she tell you?"

For a moment he looked embarrassed. "She said that you were...getting married."

Colour rose to my cheeks. He was the first person not living in this house to discuss it with me. And it made the whole ordeal seem that much more real.

"She was telling the truth."

"What!?!" he yelped, his crystal eyes darkening in a vicious manner. "What do you mean? You're only eighteen!"

"Exactly. A legal adult. Meaning that I am free to make important decisions, such as who I am to spend the rest of my life with."

He raised an eyebrow. "What does he have on you? Are you being blackmailed?"

I laughed, and it felt good. That sound hadn't crossed my lips in so long.

"I'm not with him because I'm being forced to."

"Fine. Then why are you with him?"

I straightened up a bit, looked over at Will, and mentally prepared myself to say something that I had only once thought of saying a long time ago.

"Because I love him."

Just then, there was a knock on the door. Stephanie ran over to pry it open, but stood there dumbfounded when she came face to face with two stern looking men in suits. They flashed her detective badges as soon as they stepped over the premises.

"Hello, I'm Detective Peitz and this is Detective Danielson. I'm afraid we're going to have to take a Mr. Landon Harper in for questioning.

I didn't know what to say. But of course, Stephanie did.

"What the heck did he do?"

"He's wanted in connection to a kidnapping."

OOOOOOh. Intense.

Sorry it was so short, but
