I ran towards the hospital room at full speed. The nursed saw me running and yelled after me how it was forbidden to run, but I didn't care. My mother was alive. She had survived these months. Nothing and nobody would stand in my way to see her again, as soon as possible.
I had worn another colour besides black for the first time in years. I was wearing a red top, with black skinny jeans and knee high boots, with a black fabric belt with metal studs. I had also painted my hair. Black with pink ends, like a gradient. I did this during the 6h plane trip. Had to amuse myself somehow. Dylan, like me, had gone home to change clothes, take another shower, but I didn't wait for him to come back to come with me.
I burst inside my mother's room and saw her sitting up, eating from a metal tray. She dropped her cutlery and pushed the tray away. I fell into her hug, and we both bursted crying. I saw her properly then, and my heart squeezed in my breast when I realized something. She was stronger, her weight more healthy, but she was still dying. She was keeping herself alive with sheer willpower.
"How are you mother?" I asked, still hugging her.
"Oh, my darling, my darling, I was so afraid I would never see you again. I forced myself to eat when I had no appetite, just trying to be strong in the hope I would ever see you again. How are you? How have you survived 6 months in the wild?"
"Dylan. He... He dived after me. He saved me. He hunted for us, we built a shelter, I... mother, they want me to give a press conference. Would you... DO you think we can make it here in your room? We'll just allow one reporter for each newspaper and that way you can listen to all the details."
"Do you really want to talk to the press Nyx?"
"Chloe, mum. I'm Chloe. I won't hide again." She started crying again with my answer, but I could tell they were tears of happiness now. I sat down in her bed and looked steadily at her when she looked into my eyes wonderingly.
"You changed. You're stronger." She whispered at me.
"I had to. I could not have survived otherwise." She nodded and smiled at me.
"Mum, do you mind if I go to the toilet for a bit?"
"No problem sweety. Take your time. I'm here, I'm ok." I nodded and went quickly. I did my what i went there to check, washed my hands and ran back towards her. I heard voices coming from her room, and I was going to enter when I heard his voice clearly, and I hid, listening.
"I'm sorry I didn't arrive with Chloe, she was in a hurry." Dylan laughed.
"Well, no problem, I would be in a hurry too if it were me. But, why are you here young man?" My mother asked.
"I... well, I want to ask you for your daughter in marriage." I put my hands in my mouth to quiet my gasp. Dylan... wanted to marry me?
"Oh my goodness, have you asked her?"
"No, she doesn't even know I'm planning to ask her. During those months on the island, well, I love her. And she told me she loved me too. I'm also suspicious she might be pregnant."
"Pregnant? I'm going to be a grandmother?" She cried in happiness.
"I think so, only Chloe can tell for sure."
I got inside the room then, pretending I didn't listen to anything. "What can only I say for sure?"
They jumped apart guiltily as if they were in cahoots with each other, which, I'm sure, they were.
"Why love, only you can tell for sure why you didn't wait for me." Dylan said, and I tried to avoid the urge to narrow my eyes. So, lying to me eh...
