These are known as affective disorders or depressive disorders. People with these conditions suffer changes in their moods which can include depression.
Some examples of mood disorders include:
Major depression – This is when the person is no longer interested in doing activities that they used to enjoy. This means that the person has extreme periods of sadness.
Bipolar disorder – This used to be known as manic depressive illness. This is when a person switches from mania to despair.
Persistent depressive disorder – This used to be known as dysthymia. This is a mild chronic depression disorder. People with this have similar situations to depression.
SAD Seasonal affective disorder – This is a type of depression that can be triggered by daylight. This is more common in countries that are closer to the equator during the autumn, winter and also in the early spring.
