Chapter Five: The Flea And The Acrobat - Part 1

Seven's POV

We came back to mikes house after we found Will. Eleven and I were lying on the couch, absolutely drained. We could barely move, or speak.

"What was Will saying?" Mike asked.

"Like home...like home...but dark?"

"And empty." Lucas added.

"Empty and cold. Wait did he say cold?" Dustin sighed.

"I don't know. The stupid radio kept going in and out." Lucas said.

"It's like riddles in the dark." Dustin added.

"Like home. Like his house?"

"Or maybe like Hawkins."

"Upside down." El said.

"What'd she say?" Lucas said.

"Upside down." Mike said.

"What?"

"Upside down." I said.

"When eleven and seven showed us where will was, she flipped the board over, remember?" Mike began.

"Upside down!" Mike said.

"Dark. Empty." He carried on.

"Do you understand what he's talking about?" Lucas asked Dustin.

"No." Dustin said.

"Guys, come on, think about it. When el took us to find Will, she took us to his house, right?"

"Yeah And he wasn't there!" Lucas said louder.

"But what if he was there? What if we just couldn't see him? What if he's on the other side?"

"What if this is Hawkins," Mike said flipping the board over to the normal side, "and this is where will is. The Upside down." He said flipping he board over to the dark side.

"Like the vale of shadows!" Dustin realised.

Dustin grabbed a book.

"The vale of shadows is a dimension that is a dark reflection or echo of our world. It is a place of decay and death. A plane out of phase. A place of monsters. It is right next to you and you don't even see it." Dustin began to say more serious.

"An alternate dimension." Mike said.

"But...how...how do we get there?" Lucas questioned.

"You cast shadow walk." Dustin said.

"In real life dummy." Lucas said.

"We can't shadow walk. But maybe they can." Dustin said pointing at us.

"Do you know how we get there? To the Upside down? Mike asked.

El shook her head.

"No." I simply said.

"Oh my god!" Lucas shouted.

Later

Today was the day of 'Wills' funeral. Me and eleven stayed at the house while the boys went. Since we were so tired, we both fell asleep for about 2 hours and then woke up 10 minutes before the boys came back.

The boys are back from the funeral

Mike demonstrated how to get to the upside down to us on paper. We already know where the gate is, but it's too dangerous to let them go there.

"It would take a lot of energy to build a gate like this.  But that's got to be what happened. Otherwise how'd will get there, right?"

"Right." El said nervously looking at me. We know exactly where it is.

"What we wanna know is, do you know where the gets is?" Lucas said.

El and I shook our heads. We know where it is, but we can't say, it's too dangerous.

"Then how do you know about the upside down?" Lucas said raising his voice.

"Dustin what are you doing? Dustin?" Mike asked as Dustin was looking a compass up and walking up and down.

"Dustin!" Mike shouted.

"Dustin!" Lucas then shouted.

"I-I need to see your compasses." Dustin said.

"What?"

"All of your compasses, right now!"

Everyone placed their compasses on the table.

"What's exciting about this?" Mike asked.

"Well they're all facing north, right?" Dustin started.

"Yeah, so?"

"Well that's not true north."

"What do you mean?"

"I mean what I just said, that's not true north."

"Are you both seriously this dense?"

Lucas shrugged his shoulders.

"The sun rises in the east, and it sets in the west. Right?"

"Which means, that's true north."

"So what you're saying is, the compasses are broken." Mike said.

"Do you even understand how a compass works? Do you see a battery pack on this?"

"No."

"No you don't because it doesn't need one. The needles naturally drawn to the earths magnetic North Pole."

"So, what's wrong with them?"

"Well that's what I couldn't figure out but then I remembered, you can change the direction of a compass with a magnet. If there's the presence of a more powerful magnetic field, the needle deflects that power. Then I remembered what mr Clarke said,   The gate would have so much power-" Dustin was cut off by Mike.

"It could disrupt the electromagnetic field."

"Exactly."

"Meaning, if we follow the compasses' north..." Lucas said.

"They should lead us to the gate."

Me and el exchanged 'oh no' looks. Wow Dustin is smart. He figured it out. What are we going to do? They're going to follow the compasses to the gate.
