Melanie's pov
A single tear rolled down my cheek as I kneeled down to place a tulip on a patch of dirt that lay before the gravestone of my late sister. My fingers traced the picture of her. I remember the day she made me take that picture, I really didn't want to but she made me by bribing me with chocolate. That was one of my favourite things about her, she had a way with words.I slowly started to stand back up while wiping my wet cheeks. I sniffled and heard someone talking. "Sorry I wasn't there to see you go, mom." I watched a boy say as I was pulling myself together. He must've noticed I was there because when I looked back at him I was greeted with big blue eyes looking back at me.
"Umm...hi?" I managed to fluster out. I would be lying if I said I didn't find him cute. "Hey." His eyes shifted to my sisters grave. "Your sister?" He asked with curiosity clear on his face. "Yup" I said trying to not get emotional. "Your mom?" I asked knowing the answer anyway. His eyebrows furrowed and a smile spread across his face "how'd you know?".
"Lucky guess?.." I said slightly giggling. It felt nice smiling, there hadn't been much to smile about in my life lately. There was an awkward pause before he asked "what's your name?" I low-key didn't want to tell him because I was just getting my life together and I didn't want to meet anyone new. But he was so cute I had to answer him. "Melanie" I answered reluctantly. "Melanie?... what?"
"Moore" I answered hoping he hadn't heard about my parents who didn't really have the best reputation.
"Didn't your parents kill someone or something?" He asked slightly murmuring realising that it was probably a touchy subject. It was true, me and my sister had been in and out of foster homes and care homes since I was 8 and she was 10. That's mainly why I am so distraught about her death because she's the only family member I've had.The boy's face softens as he realises that I had gone silent. "I'm sorry, i didn't mean to make you sad" he said, clearly sorry about what he had said. "It's alright, what was I meant to expect if I told you my surname?" I chuckled quietly. He nodded. "What's your name?"
I asked being oblivious to the fact that we had been talking about me this entire time. "Carl. Carl Gallagher." The words came out of his mouth with a smug look on his face. "I've heard about your family too, so I guess we're even" I said smiling. "Yeah, I guess we are." He said chuckling while looking at the ground. Carl then asked "are you doing anything today Melanie?" I looked at him surprised and shook my head.A toothy grin spread across his face and he said "then that means that we're hanging out."
