Chapter 20: Third person view

Kayla stood there with her shoulders slumped forward some as she stared at the silver door before her. What had she done now? Did the the elder change his mind about her promotion? Millions of thoughts swam around the short golden haired girls head but they were soon cut off by the sound of the door sliding open.

Kayla let out a slight yelp as she looked. She waited for it to open fully before stepping into the room lowering her eyes to the ground. "You called for me Elder?" She asked, keeping her head lowered.

"Ah! Young ooman Kayla, it is good to see you." Elder Lar'ja shifted in his seat as he looked at the newly inducted human. He seemed a little tense, if not stressed by the situation he was now in and having to tell the human of her friend's health would not go over well. "Is training going well for you?" He asked, truly curious of the matter and knowing full well she wouldn't be focused enough to answer him once he told her what happened with Skylar.

Kayla raised a brow sensing a bit of the elders discomfort, she answered nonetheless. "It's going fine Elder. A bit slow due to these." She said gesturing to the gashes barely covered by her poncho thing. "But I found ways to make due." Her teacher, H'chakde, had barely given her a moment's rest the past few days, and she was afraid it would soon take a toll on her. But Kayla was tough and would find a way to work around it.

"Good, your progress is acceptable in light of your injuries..."Elder Lar'ja stood from his seat and approached Kayla in a tired fashion, he'd clearly been stressing intensely. "There is more I have called you for, and it is unpleasant news in some ways." He could only hope this would go better than anticipated.

Kayla couldn't help but looking up at him, her brows furrowing together with concern and confusion. A whole new kind of fear blossoming in her chest, fear that almost kept her from speaking. "What is it?" She asked hesitantly through gritted teeth.

"It is of Skylar..." Elder Lar'ja took in a breath before confronting the situation carefully. "She has been experiencing your ooman fever over these past few days and she is very weak at the moment but waking."

"I want to see her." The words flew out without a moment's hesitation, the fear she had experienced replaced with anger and determination. Anger at Skylar's 'caretaker' and determination to stop at nothing to see her and help her get better. She was human after all she would know best how to help with these things, better then their medic for sure.

"It is not so simple. You might only worsen her as she is in a very fragile state." Elder Lar'ja 's face twitched with displeasure as he tried to make her understand him. "She believes, or believed that you are dead. To shock her may only injure her further. Will you risk it?" He asked eyeing her, she knew these human sicknesses better than he did so if she believed it would help then he would allow it.

Kayla thought a moment, holding back the string of curses that threatened to erupt out of her. "If there's a slight chance. . ." She began, looking at the ground a moment then back up at him. "If there's a slight that I could help her, I need to try." She looked at the Elder, her same old flame that had kept her going burned in her eyes. She was determined to see her friend especially if she was doing bad.

"Understood. Follow me." With a flourish Elder Lar'ja exited the room and expected Kayla to keep up. She had made the decision to see Skylar, there was no turning back now and if everything went south it was her own doing. He made it clear she had a choice and now they would see just how much and in what way it would affect the little weak human. "Be gentle with your words."

Kayla nodded doing her absolute best to keep up with the Elder, "Of course Elder." She placed an arm over her abdomen to help her stand up straighter as she walked. "She's in good hands, I would never intentionally harm her. She is all I have left from my home."
