Upon her neck were jewels brighter than the sunset
Diamonds, emeralds, rubies, sapphires
Strung along twine of gold and silver
She smiled to the cheering crowds
Kings, queens, families, friends

But the jewelry wrapped around her throat like rope
Chaffing, tearing, pulling
At night, she screamed and thrashed against the pain
When came morning, she collected her tears and made another pearl upon her bracelet

Every jewel for which she was renowned
Was a representation of what they didn't see
What they never saw

She wore the necklace like a noose
She bound her hands with emeralds and sapphire
The rings pricked her fingers like thorns
Her earrings dropped to the floor and shattered upon her feet
Her anklets clawed at her legs like desperate cries for freedom

Beauty is pain.
