I'll be ready for the
funeral

"JESUS, ALLY SHE DIED?" Nicky asked as she lay on her bed beside Ally.

After leaving the Cody house Ally had cycled to Nickys house. The girl had a kind of brutal honesty that tested most friendships, but Ally appreciated it. She always knew where she stood with her.

"Yeah."

"Well where are you living?" Some residual smoke hung in the air as Nicky blew out, shifting like ghosts in the breeze. It obscured the room like fog in an alley on a humid night and as Ally watched, it was giving her a headache.

"J's grandmas."

Nicky shrugged from her spot on the bed, "Well that's good atleast."

"Does she seem nice?" She wondered.

Ally brows were furrowed and her forehead was creased as she spoke. "Kind of. They're all really close though, you know? Like it's weird."

"So? Lots of families are close." Nicky responded, nevertheless her focus was on the smoke that was dancing in front of her after traveling from her mouth into the air.

"I guess. I don't know, its probably nothing."

Nicky smirked, "Yeah, your right."

"It's nothing."
...

"Hey." Ally spoke as she gazed at J with humour in her eyes, as he attempted to do his tie. "Let me help you out."

"I know what today is, and everything... But I just wanted to say, you look nice." He told her, smiling sadly.

At that moment Ally was sure her heart had truly broken. 'Why J?' she thought. He didn't deserve this.

"Thank you." She whispered.

"You gave him my best suit and tie and my new shirt." Deran inturrupted their moment as he marched down the stairs, making his presence known.

"You haven't worn this in years. You hate these things." Smurf suddenly appeared behind the couple, causing them to gaze in her direction.

"Did you know when you were a kid, he used to ride you to they highway on his cute little bmx bike and teach you to throw rocks at cars." She laughed, and Ally knew by the dazed look in her eyes she was reminiscing the memory.

"What?"

Before J could speak up, his girlfriend took the honour of stating, "Julia had a shirt just like that."

"She used to borrow this off me all the time. I'm wearing it to feel closer to her today."

"Um, how do I look?"

"Good." J barley mumbled.

"Correct." Smurf spoke while fixing his hair. "Beautiful boy."

A short while later the family had arrived at the graveyard. Rows of tombstones stood erect in silence to the left and right, in front and behind, like a sea of the dead. Some were crumbled with the weathering of centuries, some were smooth marble with new black writing and laid with floral tributes. Most though, were overgrown and unkempt, for now even their mourners had joined them under the clay soil.

"Would anyone like to say anything? J?" Smurf asked, craning her neck to ensure she locked eyes with everyone present.

"They don't belong here J. Don't stand here with them." The couple's old neighbour spoke as she stepped forward.

"It's OK she's my neighbour." J mumbled to Smurf. "Dina, not now please." He quietly begged.

"Maybe she was weak, but she did everything she could to protect you from them."

"I... I, look I'm fine. Really Dina, thank you for coming, but please."

Craig stood tall and intimidating in front of Dina, "Get the hell out of here."

"Well would anyone else like to say anything?"

Ally moved her hand that was gently resting on J's arm down to his hand and interlocked their fingers.

"Its ok. Its ok, I promise."

Allys eyes showed the kind of gentle concern J's mother used to have. She laid her hand lightly on his shoulder and he was soothed by it. She left her hand there and spoke with such a soft voice J felt her words calming him, more by the way they were said than the actual words. It felt as if he was wrapped in a blanket of her caring, never to feel pain again.
...

J and Ally sat on the beach, there eyes moving from sand to stone, from rock pools to breaking waves. In the gentle summer sunshine she felt as if she were swimming in the briny aroma, as if the new rays of the day brought a frisson of energy to her finger tips. It was a day for letting her eyes stay open, as she were an old fashioned camera, remaining still while the image developed.

"You didn't cry at the funeral." She smiled sadly, "Did you want to?"

"No."

Ally wasn't surprised at his answer. She knew the drugs had taken J's mother away a piece at a time. Once she had been the woman... The mother that held her sons hand on the way to the swings, squealing with delight and laughing as her son demanded to be pushed higher. She had been generous with her smiles and free with her hugs, but she was at rest now...at peace.

"Where'd u go been lookin' all over for you two, jump in!" The two jumped as Craig and Deran car pulled up along the sand.

Ally laughed at the pair, "We've got our bikes?"

"Uh... No, leave it! We got you new ones."

The engine sputtered to life, a horrible coughing sound like that of a dying man reached Allys ears. There was a gust of smoke blown from the engine then the car was gone.
