CHAPTER SIX:
COGNISANCE
——————————
When morning came around Harper's battery life had decreased yet again. But this didn't bother her, in fact it seemed that Harper felt much more comfortable with herself. Her limbs felt loose and free, her mind wasn't suspended in a factual haze, and Harper felt as though she could breathe again. But with that came the sudden realization that she truly had no purpose, without a single mission or task to fulfill, Harper was left to roam the house as she pleased, and so she did, all night long.
Harper was in the study when the sun began to rise, she peered around the multiple shelves of books that lined the walls. She was searching for something in particular, some sort of research journal that Mr. Hargreeves had recorded the progress of his adoptive super–children, and possibly Harper too. The idea had hit her unexpectedly, as she had not considered her own creation as a notable event, but it seemed only logical that Harper's software would be recorded somewhere.
Yet nothing of researchable value had turned up during her search, which was most odd as Harper distinctly remembered Mr. Hargreeves carrying a large book which he constantly scribbled notes into with him whenever training commenced. A simple explanation would most likely be that Mr. Hargreeves had hidden the journal, not wishing to have it found by the wrong sort, or perhaps Pogo or Grace possessed it. The two had always kept secrets from the Hargreeves children, as well as Harper herself. At the time Harper had never questioned as to why information would be kept from her, seeing as she was created prior to Pogo or Grace, was she not a reliable system?
Reliable system.
Reliable system.
Am I not trusted?
Why do they hate me–
"Harper, what on earth are you doing in here?" Pogo snapped from the entrance of the study, "you know this room is off limits!"
Harper was pulled out of her daze and her eyes focused on him, "I was just looking."
Pogo's jaw clenched, "When was the last time you were charged?"
"Yesterday."
He narrowed his eyes, "Right," He turned away and beckoned her to follow, "Now come out of there at once, you mustn't tamper with anything."
