FALL CITY ASYLUM
***Payton's POV***
It was the year 1981. I was merely 15 when my life had begun in a new place filled with new people. I was a young and curious girl, too curious for my own good. I had moved for the first time in my life to a very small town. The closest high school was in the next town over and there was only one small market. I moved from Portland, Oregon to a town called Fall City, population 485 (now 487). You could walk around the entire city in 20 minutes, so it was pretty much the smallest town ever. There were those that lived in the center of town, or like me and my mom, just barely outside of town. I had no friends, I didn't know anyone and everyone here has known each other since they were babies - hell even their great-grandparents grew up together.
Everybody knew everything there was to know about everybody and word spread quicker than a wildfire. Especially when new people come to town because that never happened, not since a little girl and her family had moved here about 10 years ago. Before we moved here, the town had told us the story about a young girl who was never found. She went into the forest one day, she wandered through the asylum and never came back. When they searched the entire place, no remains of her body were ever found, shortly afterward, the asylum was shut down because of it. Although it was 10 years ago, no one can get over the little girl who vanished completely, seemingly wiped off of the face of the earth. While unpacking I became lost in thought about everything that had happened and what my life was going to be in this new and incredibly small town. My mom and I had people knocking on our door for three hours almost as soon as we arrived. People were greeting us, giving us baked goods, and offering to help us settle in. They were all so eager to see us. It felt as if I were an animal at a zoo being stared at for everyone 's entertainment, I guess we are the most exciting thing this town has seen in a very long time. I was so thankful when there was no one at the door for an entire hour. At last some peace and quiet. I grabbed a chocolate chip muffin and headed upstairs to get a bag. It was time to go. I grabbed my backpack, the contents consisting of water, food, a blanket, and a flashlight, all in case of an emergency, or me getting lost. I grabbed my walkman and put in my favorite Queen album and started my adventure. I looked at all the intricate shapes of the Evergreens, Weeping Willows, Red Alder, Red-Cedar, and Spruce trees, admiring how they grew, spiraling upwards over the many years. I let my mind wander, catching in the beauty of the forest caped in moss and the light mugginess the woodland held.
I was probably walking for 45 minutes when I noticed the old, run-down building. Rust poured down the sides, curling around the barred windows; it looked as if the building has not been touched in many years. Being the curious person that I am, I walked closer to the building. It turns out to be the town's old insane asylum. The sign reaching up and over to form an arch what once spelled Fall City Asylum, but most of the letters have fallen. A rusted F lays by my feet and many other letters scattered and becoming one with the earth. I walk close to the building, running my hand along the crumbling brick walls searching for an entrance. I find a door falling off of the hinges as I opened it more so I could go in I was greeted with a metal-on-metal screech that echoes through the forest. Cold air rushes past me in a hurry to free itself from this damp, slimy, and mossy abandoned building. I peered inside and as I walk into the building I reached in my backpack and grabbed a flashlight and the things I saw were haunting. A spiral staircase laying in the middle of the room, a marble angel shattered at its walkway. I stepped over the angel ripping my jeans and cut my calf on a sharpened piece of marble. "Crap" I muttered to myself, the single word seemed to echo for miles.
