I've noticed that somethings in life can take you by surprise, imagine how surprised I was when I realized that people were mutating into monsters. They were not only killing people but consuming them like barbecue baby back ribs on a Sunday evening. Funny enough, that's how this all started, on a Sunday evening. And that's how it all ended.

I left my job in Washington to go and visit my family for a few weeks. It's been almost two years since I last saw them. Also I thought I could use a vacation from all the nonsense at work. Being a Medical Scientist is not an easy job especially when you're working around contagious diseases that could kill you if you came into contact with it. That wasn't something I was always worried about. It was mostly my controlling boss. I was glad to finally get a break from her.

The car ride there was just a mess. Part of me just wishes I would have taken a plane. There were four car accidents, multiple ambulances, and police cars It concerned me slightly because they were heading in the same direction where my job is. I decided not to think much of it, accidents happen all the time, and so do emergencies.

I spent about three days in total on the highway. I was happy I had finally arrived at my parent's residence. I parked in the street in front of the house and got my suitcases out of the trunk. I stepped up to the front door and knocked. No one answered. Strange, I thought to knock again. When no one answered the door for the second time, I called my mom. No response. I called my dad. No response. The house phone. No response. I tried the door handle. It was unlocked. I went inside concerned that something serious may have occurred.

"Hello?" I called out. "It's Madison. I'm home," I said a little louder. "Madison?" a small voice called out. It was Abigail. She sounded terrified and that worried me. "Yes, it's me, where are you, sweetheart?" I asked her. "You can come out, it's safe, I promise," I told her. "It's not safe. I'm afraid daddy and mommy are going to try and eat me again." I wish I knew what she meant by that, but I soon figured it out. My parents had become monsters and they were standing right behind me.

I packed up the rest of the canned goods that I found inside my neighbors' house and walked back home. I'm glad I managed to find enough food to last us a little while, even if it wasn't the kind of food I wanted to eat. Once I got home I could tell the blood on my clothes was starting to stink. I need to shower and throw these clothes away, I thought. I make sure to bolt the door once I'm inside. I check my sister's room to see if she is still sleeping. I was happy to see she was. If there's anything I'm grateful for it's that she can get some sleep.

I shut the door softly and go into the living room where I folded clothes last evening. I took a sweatshirt, t-shirt, and some jeans, and went into the bathroom. I silently prayed that the water was on. I was lucky enough that the water was on but not lucky enough for the water to be warm. I really hated taking cold showers, I knew it was something that I'd never get used to.

It's already been several days since we lost our parents. It's been rough. All of a sudden your parents are gone and you have to raise a kid all by yourself. I still remember it like it was yesterday, but it feels like years ago that this even happen. In reality, it was just last week when it happened.

"A-Abigail I'm so sorry." I sobbed. "I had to kill them, they tried to hurt me." She held me tight as I continued to cry. She was soon sobbing right along with me. I wiped both hers and my tears away. "Abby, I want you to watch tv while I call the police okay, they need to know what happened." She nodded. I sat her down in front of the tv and made a phone call to the police station. "Sorry, your call cannot be completed, goodbye." My phone said. I checked my signal. No service. "Madison...Look at the tv." "Oh my god. What is happening?"

I knew that memory would haunt me for years to come. When I'm about done in the shower a soft knock comes to the bathroom door. "Yes?" I yell out. "Madison, there are people outside," She said sounding startled. I turn off the water. "Hold on, let me get dressed, I'll be right there," I said drying off with a towel. I quickly put on my clothes on and hurried out to see what she was talking about. Abigail was sitting on the sofa looking through the curtains. "There are people outside." She said. "Sugar..." I paused. "There aren't any people outside, it's probably just the monsters remember?" She swayed her head. I took a glimpse outside. To my surprise, there were people outside.
