It was a rainy, cold day in february, the sun hasn't come out in what felt like ages, but Gilbert didn't care. This weather described his mood just perfectly. His country was exhausted from the war, the humans he trusted were long banished or dead, he or Julchen were not welcome in the government anymore.
They had to hide from Hitler's soldiers, they were a threat to him because they knew too much and could not be executed.
Together, Julchen and Gilbert wandered the fields of Prussia for months, for years, until they found a small village which wasn't as affected as the others. They built a house, disguised themselfes, managed to built up a new life and hell, that wasn't easy. Almost white hair, pale skin and red eyes wasn't the most common thing, so they were hunted if they weren't wearing anything to cover at least their heads.
But this village was different. The people didn't cared, why should they? There was a war going on, there were much more important things to worry about than the appearance of two runaways.
The ablinos sat in their house, Gilbert at the table reading the newspaper, while Julchen sat on the ledge of the window, staring outside.
" 'Find the traitors, capture them and lock them away for all eternity! Let them rott deep underground, we'll see how immortal they are without food or sunlight!' ...was it?"
Gil looked up upon hearing those words cut through the silence that had lingered in the room since hours, his gaze meeting Jul's.
"How long has it been now? Three years, maybe five?" Her eyes didn't shift at first, they rested on his face, which now formed an angry frown, then she looked back outside. Those were the last things they heard before they started running, from no other than Hitler himself. Not like he could, but Gilbert wanted to forget them, just for now.
"Five years. Why are you bringing this up now?" He closed the newspaper, but continued to look at her with a fierce gaze. Julchen didn't look back, the muddy streets outside and the rain seemed to be much interesting. Even when she started talking again, she didn't quite answer him.
"Prussia is falling, Gilbert. It's nothing more than a name anymore. We have no government, we are on the run, people start forgetting about us. I'm starting to doubt our immortality." The female nation finally looked up again, and he almost thought to see worry in her blood red eyes. "What happenes to Nations when they dissolve? Are we going to die like humans? Are we just going to vanish? What is going to happen to us? .....Will they even remember us?" She shook her head before Gilbert had any chance to answer and looked outside again, watching some people looking for shelter.
He thought about it, but came to no answer, of course not, so he just tried to get her out of this gloomy mood. "What makes you so sure we're going to die? It's not the en-" "Who are you trying to fool here?", Julchen interrupted and shot him a glare. "You know just as much as I do that it's only a few days, weeks at best until they'll officially dissolve us. And honestly, I want to know what's going to happen, so tell me!"
Gilbert lowered his head to escape her glare, but he could feel it burning on his skin. She was right. Of course he knew all she said was true, but oh how much he wished it wasn't. They didn't have anyone to ask, everyone was busy with war, and in this condition he doubted that anyone would give him the information he wanted. "....I...don't know."
When he looked up her look softened, he knew she didn't mean to yell at him like that, but in that point, they were quite alike.
The room fell silent again, but before he could pick up the paper again, Julchen stood up, her hand wandered to the gun she hid under the wide clothes.
"Gil. They're coming."

There were four soldiers outside, waiting for them as the two albinos stepped outside into the mud on the streets. They always wore their military uniforms under the torn disguises, to be prepared for cases like this. Both of them prefered combat and fighting with swords, but due to all the new technology, Gil convinced Jul that they had to carry guns. Still, she strictly refused to use it if not neccessarry.
