June woke up, late in the night, needing water because her mouth was so dry. She had dreamed about the mystery girl again, but never found out who she was. This had been happening for the past week, ever since she fell at school.
She got out of bed and made her way to the kitchen for a glass of water. The scars on her back were burning, they'd been bothering her for a while but didn't want to tell her parents because they'd worry too much. She reached up and rubbed her shoulder with one hand as she made her way to the kitchen. She was passing her parents room when she heard talking.
"Peter, I'm afraid for June. Something isn't right with her. Ever since the incident at school, she's been acting strangely." June stopped at the mention of her name. She walked slowly towards her parent's room and peeked through the crack in the door. She could only see the edge of the bed, but neither of her parents were in her sight.
"Jen you need to stop worrying. The teacher said it was just a case of mild dehydration. You know as well as me how hot it gets this time of year. Please let it go, I'm sure she is just shocked from blacking out so suddenly." Peter said in his typical soft-spoken voice.
"Peter, I'm just scared, I don't know why, but something doesn't feel right and I want to figure out what it is."
June knew they were talking about what happened last week. Everyone was talking about it. She could hear the parents huddled in the hallways, whispering to each other in the mornings, the other children talked about her in class, and everyone laughed at her again. Joey stayed by her all the time and yelled at the other kids for making fun of her. But they were right, she must have something wrong with her.
Suddenly, June felt the familiar tingling in the back of her head. She felt the same sensation right before she blacked out last week. She was scared but soon it suddenly felt like thousands of tiny needles were being forced into her brain all at once. She let out a cry before falling to the ground.
"June?" The door opened and the hall was suddenly filled with bright light "JUNE!" She could hear her mom, but it was too late. The darkness had already taken her once again. She slipped into a deep sleep, the last thing she saw was her mom and dad's concerned faces before everything turned white. This time, instead of being scared, June was determined to figure our the identity of the mystery girl.
She could hear laughing. June looked around and found herself standing in an open field that was made of cotton candy so soft and white. The sky was blue and there were no clouds above her. Big birds flew in the sky far above, beautiful with bright white wings. The wind blew June's hair across her face. She lifted her hand to push it away when she heard someone calling to her.
"Raven, love, isn't today beautiful?" She turned and right beside her was her twin copy, Raven. Raven smiled and looked at the girl before nodding her head. June turned to look for who Raven was speaking to and saw the mystery girl she had been thinking of for the past week. Her hair was tied back in a high ponytail with a simple rose-colored ribbon. Simple but so very beautiful. She was wearing a light blue sundress with an open back. And there, across her back, was a pair of magnificent white wings. June blinked and looked closer at the girl's back. Yes, they were wings. She looked like a goddess, with a bright shine in her green eyes that shone with happiness, and her face that was full of youth. Her gaze settled on Raven beside her.
Then she looked behind Raven. On her back was an identical pair of white wings. She wanted to reach up and touch them. June stared at Raven closer, her hair was straight and black in color. Tied back into a ponytail held up with a deep, forest green ribbon that she knew symbolized a warrior class, just like she knew the mystery girl's rose ribbon symbolized music. Raven wore a black sleeveless top and loose navy pants. At her side hung what looked like the handle of a sword. There was no blade though which was strange. She turned back to look at the girl next to Raven and stared.
"Raven, you can stop staring, it's making me feel self-conscious!" She laughed. Her head thrown back.
"Sorry love. It's just that I can't seem to get over how lucky I am to have you. You are so beautiful." Raven said.
"Well don't you have a way with words. Ha, you are so good, Raven. I love you as well. Now the day is perfect, will you join me in the air?" The girl looked over and again held her hand out. A gust of wind blew and her hair and dress moved ever so slightly in the air. She looked amazing. A stray hair blew across her face and she wanted to reach up and brush it away.
"Anything for you love. Anything for you, Charlotte." And Raven grabbed the girl, Charlotte's, hand. June felt a sudden burst of excitement and happiness inside of her. She had never felt anything like it before. She wanted to protect and love this girl in front of her with everything in herself. She felt strange. She felt connected to her. She was Raven, but she couldn't remember anything from their time together.
She watched as Raven's wings opened and in three powerful strokes, she rose above the ground. She was flying! June couldn't believe it was real. It wasn't possible, but it was so real. She watched Raven push her wings further and then she went soaring through the air. Even though June didn't have wings on her back, somehow, she found herself floating up to stay near Raven. Charlotte rose through the air following her. She slowed and then laughed out loud. In the air, June felt so free and unburdened. She looked at Raven and Charlotte together and knew she loved her so much.
They flew side by side in the air. What she had thought was the ground, was actually low clouds that looked like cotton balls from the air, and in the distance, the things she had perceived as birds, were actually other people. Flying in pairs and alone, a dozen other people with wings on their backs were flying through the air like herself. She was stunned. It was a beautiful sight. She turned in the direction of the other people when Charlotte called to her.
"Raven ready to go?"
"Yeah" replied Raven and Charlotte took off towards the distance. They were coming closer to a city of some sorts. It had tall buildings and sky bridges where multiple people were landing from flight. The bridges looked like giant spheres hovering in the sky that were connected to one another with smaller walkways. June was confused. She didn't know what that place was, but one word kept coming up in her head.
Home.
"June honey are you alright?" June slowly cracked her eyes open. Her mom was leaning towards her. She could see her dad as well as her two sisters. Lynn was holding Jessie's small hand while looking towards June with a scared look in her eyes. She looked around the room, she was on the couch in their living room.
"Yeah, I'm fine, sorry mom. I'm not sure what happened, but I'm okay now." She tried to get up when her dad gently pushed her back down against the pillows.
"Sweetie, maybe you should just rest for a little bit. You just blacked out again, it's a little soon to be getting up again." He had a concerned look in his eyes. He loved June a lot, his gentle soul was so kind towards her. Peter loved his family and was scared for June.
None of the Bennets knew what was happening to their daughter. And not knowing was scaring them.
"Get some rest, sweetheart, we can talk more in the morning." With that, Jen and Peter both kissed June on her forehead and told Lynn and Jessie to go to bed as well.
June slept very little that night. Her mind running full speed. Thinking about the girl Charlotte and the wings that she had. How wonderful it felt to fly. A dream she always wished for ever since seeing the movie X-Men where one of the characters had wings that let him fly in the air. She wanted to go back to her dream, where she saw Charlotte and learn more about the big city she felt was... Home.
