Night fell over the island, giving off an ominous feeling. Several feet away from me, a fire blazed, sending sparks into the dark sky. Pan sat on a log, playing his pipe, while all of the lost ones danced around the fire, jumping and hollering.
Baelfire and I sat on our own long, watching with slight interest. He wanted to join the others, I could tell. I knew he heard the beautiful music Pan was playing. Well, I had been told it was beautiful. I'd never heard it for myself. Apparently, only boys who felt lost or unloved could hear the music. I was neither of those things, of course.
Through the fire, I saw Pan watching me as he held his pipe to his lips, playing notes with ease. He watched me through his lashes, one eyebrow quirked, before he turned his attention back to the lost ones.
The only boy not participating in the night's events was Felix. I was somewhat curious as to why Pan's right-hand man was not taking part in this, but I tossed the thought away. None of this would matter once I got back on the Jolly Roger.
Speaking of which, I hadn't seen or heard from yet. Granted, I'd only been here a day, and Pan probably had very powerful cloaking spells on this camp. But my dad was smart and cunning. He would figure something out.
Soon enough, Pan stopped playing his pipe, though the boys never ceased dancing. As he stood up from his spot on the log, he made eye contact with me once more, the fire dancing in his eyes.
He sauntered over to Baelfire and I, causing me to tense up and scoot closer to Bae.
"No reason to seem so jumpy, love, " he said, tilting his head to the side, "I was only coming here to deliver the good news - I've decided to give you each your own tents." With a wave of his hand, two tents made from animal skin appeared near the edge of the camp.
"Well, that's rather generous of you, " I replied, pursing my lips, "What's the catch, Pan?"
Pan chuckled, shaking his head. "Catch? There is no catch, love. Though you should consider yourself lucky I'm even allowing you to live this long. You know girls are rather unwanted here on Neverland."
Standing up, I faced him straight on. "Even better - let me go back to my father."
He leaned towards my face, a malicious grin playing on his lips. "No one leaves this island, love."
My blood boiled at his response, and I had to refrain from popping him in the jaw right then and there. Turning to Baelfire, I grabbed his arm, yanking him up before I stalked away from Pan and his disgusting grin.
"Are we still going through with the plan?" Baelfire murmured, casting a side glance at Pan.
I nodded, my mood sour from the green-eyed teen's condescending attitude. Something about Pan just made my skin crawl. Not many people could do that, which made me even more uneasy about him.
Our plan was not the most eleborate one - but we were both quick and quiet, able to sneak in and out of things quickly. When everyone was asleep, we would make our way back to the Jolly Roger - even if we had to swim our way there.
If Pan caught us, we agreed to split up, making it harder for both of us to be caught. The plan was somewhat rocky, but my adrenaline was already going. I was a bit nervous, but who wouldn't be? Escaping a place was never easy or fool-proof. There were numerous things that could go wrong. One being Pan catching us. But we decided to think of that as worst-case scenario.
As twilight approached, the lost ones began to tire out and retreat to their tents, including Pan and Felix. Playing along, Baelfire and I crept into our own tents, giving each other a brief nod before we did so.
