This book is written when they finally diagnosed me with chronic depression. Caia is battling her depression in a very visual way, no one else can see it but Vulcan. That's the reasons they are so drawn together, because they are both drawn to the darkness.
When the Darkness attacks them, it's based off of a panic attack. And when it's 'swirling' it's like a beginning of a panic attack
Little hint to you, Caia is the Roman goddess of fire, Vulcan is the Greek god of fire.
