Tony stared at hi-the kids door pondering whether this was a good idea. He knew Peter had lied and now he was wondering whether he even wanted to stay at the tower. They needed to sort out what is happening.
Peter knew Tony was outside his door, thanks to his super hearing he always knew where Tony was as he was always followed by a dull mumur of the arch reactor. Peter too was pondering what to do. Obviously he wanted to stay with Mr. Stark but be couldn't just ask him to adopt him. Peter didn't want to be needy OR a burden. Therefore the only solution was to go to an orphanage. As much as he disliked this idea, it was the only way to not be a pain in Tony's extremely expensive life.
As Tony cracked the door Peter ripped himself from his thoughts.
'Hey, Pete, I think we should have a talk' Tony said with sincerity in his voice.
Oh god he's kicking me out Peter's mind screamed at him.
'OK' Peter replied while picking at loose threads from his top.
'Why did you lie out there, Kid? They're the avengers not lunatics who are gonna kill you for feeling upset' Tony was trying to incorporate humour into his sentences hoping that Peter may crack a grin - he didn't.
'I know' Peter murmured back
'So what's up buddy?' Tony asked.
Its now of never Peter thought. He knew he couldn't stay at the tower forever, he didn't want to be the broken kid that they had to look after instead of saving the world.
'I think I should go to an orphanage' Peter whispered so quietly Tony only just heard what he had said. It's safe to say that Tony's heart shattered as soon as those words left Peter's mouth. He loved Peter as his own son and the fact that he would rather going to an orphanage then stay with him was devastating. He couldn't make the kid stay though, if that's what he wanted then that's what would happen. Tony would never even think about not fulfilling exactly what the kid wanted.
Tony stayed silent for a moment as he tried to rebuild his heart enough to not cry once he started talking.'Oh, I see, that's fine if you want Peter. I guess legal people will be coming over soon anyway to get you sorted out so we'll sort it out then.' Tony's voice cracked throughout all of this mini rant. Before Peter could reply Tony went sprinting out of the room before a sob could escape his mouth.
Secretly Peter knew he had made a mistake. That voice crack in Tony's voice was unmistakably one caused by suppressing tears. However Peter told himself what he had done was right. He really didn't want to be a burden after all.
It's safe to say neither Peter or Tony came out of their rooms for the rest of the day. In fact Tony didn't leave his room for days. Not even when Peter left with the orphanage owner who was overly kind. He knew that if he even looked at Peter's puppy eyes he would break down and he didn't want the kid to feel as if he was desperate for him to say. He didn't want to be a burden.
-------------------
The moment Peter set his eyes on the orphanage owner - who refused to be called anything but Miss - his spider senses rung obnoxiously loudly. He knew something wasn't right but he pushed it to the back of his mind. However once everything was settled between 'Miss' and Steve Rogers (who had to fill on for Tony) and the two left the tower, Peter knew he shouldn't of ignored his senses. They had never been wrong before of course.
'Get in the car your ungrateful brat' Miss said before roughly shoving Peter inside the car. As he cried out she slammed the door on his foot before locking all windows and doors. This was going to be a long life.
