"ashton, my dad's dying," luke choked into the phone, grasping onto his pillow like his life depended on it.
"what? luke, i-how?" he whispered into the receiver of his work's telephone.
"they found a tumor, said he's got a couple weeks. we were too late, i-i was too late, ash."
ashton felt himself tear up because well, luke's dad was like his dad.
though ashton never had a dad, luke's dad was the only one he had growing up.
"i'll-i'll take off work. i'm coming over, okay?"
luke sniffed and mumbled an 'okay' in response. ashton hung up the phone and rounded the counter to his boss' office.
"sir, i've got a family emergency and i was wondering if i could go for a bit? i really need to be there," ashton begged, seeing as his boss never really let him leave except for the very few days his boss was in a good mood.
his boss sighed and held the bridge of his nose. "whatever, you're working late shift tomorrow, though."
ashton smiled and nodded. "thank you, sir."
ashton turned around and made his way toward the entrance. he grabbed his coat from the little coat rack beside the main doors.
he hopped in his car and waited for it to warm up a bit before he drove off into the streets of d.c.
once he reached luke's apartment, he practically jumped out and raced for the stairs, seeing as the elevator took to long for him.
he took two steps at a time, running for his best friend in his time of need.
sure enough, he was out of breath by the time he reached the fourth floor he regretted not taking the elevator in the first place.
he searched for apartment D13 in the surprisingly well-kept apartment building.
once he found the door he was looking for, he burst in to find luke sitting on the kitchen floor with a pillow in his hand and a jar of pickles in his lap, something that only happened if he was angry or sad.
"he was cheating on her," he laughed a dry laugh, tear stains obvious on his cheeks.
"oh, lukey," ashton pouted and sat next to the sad, sad boy. he wrapped an arm around his shoulders and luke nuzzled his head into the crook of ashton's neck.
"he was cheating on her with his secretary, ash," luke whispered into the scruffiness of ashton's neck.
ashton felt drops of water run down his chest and squeezed luke even tighter, wrapping his other arm around him for a full bear hug.
"it's all going to be alright, lukey. i love you, okay?"
luke nodded and let out a shaky breath that he didn't know he was holding. "i love you, too. stay with me for the rest of the night, please?"
ashton nodded and kissed the top of luke's head. "of course, luke. i'll stay with you," ashton bit his lip because though he couldn't stay, he knew he had to. maybe rosalie would understand why he didn't show up for their date.
soon, luke's crying turned into hiccups. then, it went from hiccups to steady breaths.
ashton carried luke bridal style to his bedroom and set him down on his bed, covering him up.
he went back out into the kitchen and screwed the lid on the pickle jar and grabbed a beer from the fridge.
he walked into luke's little living room and turned on the tv, turning the volume down so luke wouldn't wake.
ashton bit his lip and sighed, thinking over everything that's happened to luke over the past week. he's been so stressed and dreading to wake up lately, like he had been before. now, his dad was dying? he couldn't help but feel sorry for his best friend.
he grabbed his phone from his back pocket and began typing in rosalie's number.
after the third ring, his annoying girlfriend had picked up. "ashton, where are you? you're making me look stupid."
"look, i can't make it."
"why?" rosalie whisper-shouted.
"well, luke's da-"
"it's always about luke, isn't it?" rosalie snapped, the sound of cars whizzing past apparent. she had left the restaurant.
"rosalie, you don't understand. luke's da-"
"no!" she had interrupted ashton for the second time and by now, ashton was pissed off. "i'm your girlfriend, luke's not. okay? call me when your head is out of your ass."
ashton huffed and clicked the end button. rosalie had become ten times more annoying ever since she had brought up them getting married. he was 20 and he knew he should probably settle down for real soon, but he couldn't do that with rosalie.
exhausted from the day's events, he closed his eyes for a brief moment.
and then he heard the tiniest, cutest voice his ears could ever been blessed with hearing.
"ashton, will you come lay with me?"
he snapped his eyes open and looked at the younger boy, seeing him with his covers draping over his shoulders. he was rubbing his tired eyes, pouting a little and ashton almost cooed.
ashton nodded and quickly got up, shutting off the tv before he left the living room.
following luke to his bedroom, he started to feel even more sympathy towards the younger.
once he was in the doorframe leading into luke's bedroom, he just stared at the gigantic adult. he found it weird how someone so big could look so tiny, and how he looked like he did when he was fifteen. ashton misses fifteen year old luke.
"you look cute like that," ashton smiled softly.
luke turned over, still draped in covers from head to toe. "like what?" he spoke softly, as if the volume of his voice determined whether or not glass would break.
ashton shrugged and his smile grew, trailing over to luke's bed. "all cute, in a little bundle of covers and sadness. even at your worst, the great luke hemmings could never look horrible. you, my friend, are modern art."
luke blushed as ashton laid down carefully next to him. "you're just saying that because i'm sad," he sniffled.
"well, yes," ashton raised and eyebrow, "but it's also cause i think it's true. i swear, lukey."
luke smiled and wiped the excess tears off his face. he felt happy for a second, until realization dawned on him again.
"ash, what's going to happen to my family? my dad isn't gonna live and my mom is so crushed by the affair and the death overall, how will we manage?" luke squeaked out.
ashton frowned and pulled him close, whispering into his hair. "i don't know, lukey baby. we'll figure it out."
luke nodded and ashton felt little droplets drip onto his collarbones. ashton didn't really know what to do, so he just sang to luke. luke used to really like when ashton sang to him just because, maybe times really haven't changed and it was the same as always.
"you'll always be perfect, you'll always be beautiful.." ashton trailed off, instantly forgetting the lyrics. he didn't know why he knew those lines specifically, but it made luke happy.
"amelia," luke whispered and laughed lightly, "my favorite fucking song. you bastard."
ashton laughed and kissed the top of his best friends head.
luke cried some more because it was completely platonic. his dad might have had something to do with it, though.
