"I don't like this plan..." I dabbed some more fake blood on Jesse's cheek, "Well, no one asked you. Mace, you ready for this?"

"Nope. Let's do this." I snickered, shoving his shoulder away, "That's the spirit, doofus. Jessica! Get to the tree... Now!"

He started jogging and turned into a gingery-colored wolf, running to the willow next to my house. This was going to be perfect. He would "attack" me, Mace would shift and "scratch" him across the face, and Mom or Dad would come out and see him protect me.

We started walking to my house, too nervous to make small talk. "So... you think this is actually going to work?" Nope. Not at all. Zero chance. Zip. Zilch. Nada. Bupkes.

"Maybe. If Jesse doesn't screw up... If my Dad doesn't freak..." He gave me a half-smile, "That's a lot of 'if's', Reggie." I raised an eyebrow; Reggie?

"I was just trying out a nickname!" I smirked, "Well, let me help you. I like Gee." Now it was his turn to raise an eyebrow, "Gee, huh? Does Jesse call you that?" I groaned, "No... He says 'Regina', or 'Shorty'... When I had my stutter he called me 'R-r-retard'. Bastard." Mace laughed and put his arm around my shoulders, lighting more fires on my skin.

"I wish I had met you earlier. I mean, I missed the stutter?" I rolled my eyes, "You didn't miss anything." He laughed, "I call bullshit! Can you still force it?"

"Y-yeah, I c-can. I'll st-stutter wh-whenever I get s-stressed t-too."

He laughed, and, for a moment, for a single, glorious moment, I almost forgot that my Dad didn't approve. Almost.

I could see the tree and my breathing hitched... Here goes nothing, I guess. We nodded at each other and continued on, trying to act natural.
