Inside the station there was a small resemblance to what you see in TV shows, people bustling about, criminals being detained, people waiting around. I stood there looking around for someone familiar. Finally, I spotted my friends having a somewhat heated discussion with the lady at the front desk.
You dont understand, Brandon exclaimed. Emmett was our best friend. We just want to know where you guys are on the case!
Im sorry sir, Im not at a liberty to give out this type of information, the woman said looking at her computer.
But- Brandon started,
Sir, please. My answer is final, She said. The phone behind her starts ringing, she yelled to the back of the office for someone to pick up the phone but there is no response. She got up to go answer it and simultaneously a detainee starts to cause a commotion. As all eyes are drawn away Alex snatched something off of her desk.
Alright guys lets go sit down. Maybe someone will help us, Alex said. Brandon grabs a couple newspapers and silently sits on the bench across from the desk. We sit next to him and look at what Alex grabbed from behind the newspaper.
Oh my god, Emma breathed. Look, they found the murder weapon! She quietly exclaimed.
Thats not all they found, Brandon murmured, pointing to the evidence section. It said that the weed was found in Emmetts room, that he was talking to people to buy drugs. According to recovered text messages, Emmett was behind on payments and the Chaves Gang was fed up with his lack of money, so they solved the problem by making him pay; with his life. The shell of the bullet used to kill Emmett was traced to a gun that was thrown away. They found fingerprints on the gun that belonged to one, Hernando Chavez. We looked at each other, the name sounded familiar but we couldnt think of who it was. Just as we read that another detainee was brought in, he was dressed in all dark clothes, the strong smell of weed and Axe filled the waiting area.
As he walked by, the world seemed to move in slow motion, like in movies. But unfortunately this wasnt a movie. We couldnt just turn off the TV and continue on with our lives. This was our lives.
Hey Ice Queen, Hernando said to Emma then turned towards me, Hows your brother? He laughed as the officer behind him shoved his head down to silence him.
Jax walked out of an interrogation room and I ran towards him.
Are you okay? I asked.
Yeah, he said smirking, They just wanted to know what I knew, which was as much as you. He paused. Im sorry about Emmett, but at least we know who did it, He looked me in the eyes.
Yeah, I suppose it helps. It doesnt change the fact that hes gone though, I said a strange feeling of understanding wrapped around me, like a blanket of knowledge that was getting too warm but I didnt want to remove.
Hey, he said, I get it, I lost my grandpa over winter break. But they wouldnt want us to stop our lives to grieve theirs, not for too long anyway, He said lightly placing his hand next to mine.
Yeah, youre right. And Im sorry.
Dont be. Its not like you killed him, Jax smirked making me smile along with him. So, he said, Since the river is out of the question, where would be a good first date location? He asked.
I hear the café across the street is pretty good, I smiled.
Well then, I might have to go check it out, he said, his smile widening. He started to walk away leaving me shocked. Hey, he said turning around. Wanna check out that café across the street with me tomorrow? I smiled.
Id love to.
