Chapter 25: McCarroll Ranch

Flashback 

You and Clem, you in the front and Clem sitting behind you, were riding on a horse, getting close to Ranch. "AJ...we're coming." You muttered as you snap the reigns and the horse takes you guys forward. You come up to the entrance of the ranch to see that it was on fire. Yours and Clem's jaw drop as you see the place. "No." You two whispered, devastated, and you make the horse charge towards the Ranch.

You guys get to the bridge when a gunshot sounds out and the horse neighs in pain. It raises up and bucks you and Clem off of its back, making you scream in fear, and flops down to the side. You two roll a few times until both of you land on your fronts. Both of you look up at the horse, which dies in front of you, just as you hear another gunshot. You and Clem crawl towards the horse and Clem pulls out his gun, aims it at the shooter and shoots him in the neck.

You could hear the man gurgle as Clem stands up then holds his hand out to you. You take it and he helps you up then both of you run over to the man. Clem gets in front of the man, grabs his gun and aims it at the man. "We're looking for a boy. He's about three years old. His name's Alvin Junior--" Clem interrogates but the man's answer was the bird.

You clench your fist in anger as Clem shoots the man in the head. Both of you get inside of the building, when you felt something grab your foot. You screamed as you turn and look down to see a man, who was half burned, looking up at you and Clem. "Please. Please kill me." He begs. "Where are the children?" You asked him. "It hurts. Oh my God, it hurts so bad." The man moans and you unsheathed your sword as you look at the man with pity. "Kill me." He begs and you stab the man in the head.

You pull your sword out and let out a heavy sigh at this. Clem places his hand on your shoulder and you look up at him then nod at him. He nods back and the two of you walk deeper into the Ranch.

"Eat some of this shit!" A guy shouts as he fires his gun at someone you guys couldn't see at the end of the hall. The man looks up, sees you and Clem then turns his gun on you two. "More?" He asked and he starts to fire but you and Clem duck down. "Fuck you!" He shouts as you two hide behind some barrels. The man runs out of bullets and Clem stands up and shoots the man.

"Ahhhh! You stupid asshole!" The man screams as you two run towards the man as he holds his arm. "We're not messing around! Tell us where the kids are!" Clem asked, angrily, as he holds up the man's head with one hand and aims the gun under the man's chin with the other hand. "All right, all right. That way...." the man replies as he points to your left. "There's a nursery. But I'm not letting one of you savages take a kid!" The man yells and he raises his knife but Clem shoots him before anything could happen.

You and Clem look at each other before you two head towards the direction of the nursery. You guys hear music and you come upon a car with its lights going off and the radio playing music. You and Clem walk past it then shut the driver's door, that was wide open, and continue on.

You guys come up to a room that had bunkbeds and a door that was slightly open on the other side of the room. "Sorry....sorry...so sorry." You two hear a woman whisper. "Don't worry. We're leaving soon." You and Clem look at each other, fearfully, before you two run towards the door and open it. The woman turns around and sees you two. "No! I won't let you..." she exclaims as she starts to pull out her gun but Clem was quicker as he shoots her in the face. The woman's body falls over and Clem lowers the gun as you two hear a child crying.

"AJ...." you two whisper and you two run over to the lockers. You, after you sheathed your sword, go to the locker, that had drawings on it, and grab the handle but it was locked. You slammed your fist on the door and look down in defeat as Clem looks over the woman's body and found keys in her hand. He takes the keys then hands it to you, you take it and unlock the door then slowly open it to see AJ, covered in blood, cowering in the corner.

"AJ..." You and Clem said and he turns his head to you two. "It's us. Clem and (y/n)." Clem said as he starts to reach out to him but AJ cowers back and cries. You and Clem give him a concerned look before you go ahead and reach out and place your hands on AJ. He slightly looks at you then turns away as you slowly pull him out of the locker and he turns around as you place your hands under his arms and pull him close to your chest. 

"That's it, buddy." Clem whispers as AJ hugs you then looks down and saw the woman's dead body. He screams and cries and you turn around so that he wouldn't look at the dead body. "Hey, hey, hey....look at me, AJ." Clem whispers as he places a soothing hand on AJ's back. "Let's get you out of here, okay?" You said and you two began to walk out of the room and head over to the car.

Clem goes to the passenger side of the car and opens the door. "Get inside." He said to you and you climb inside and sit down. AJ pulls back from the embrace and looks up at you then up at Clem, almost like he didn't recognize you two. You look down at him then up at Clem, who has a worried look. Does he remember us? You thought to yourself as Clem shuts the door and goes over to the driver's side and gets in.

You look down and found a napkin. You pick it up and start to clean AJ's face. Once you were done, you smile down at AJ as he continues to sniffle and look up at you in fear. You frown then look over at Clem, who sighs and turns his head away. "Okay. Now. Where to?" You asked him. "Can't go back to Richmond....this whole area is a war zone." Clem replied.

"Gotta..." you said, distracted, as you think over your options.

"Go?" AJ's little voice asked. You and Clem look down at him and you guys nodded. "Yeah. We have to go, AJ." You replied. "This place, we can't stay here. It's not safe."

"But it's okay. We're survivors. And the first rule of survival is....never go alone." Clem says to him. AJ sniffles and rubs his eyes then said. "Never go alone." You two smirk at him when AJ looks up at Clem. "Clem?" He asked and you and Clem look at him shock. Clem chuckles, breathless, and said. "That's right, buddy."

AJ then looks up at you. "(Y/n)?" You let out a laugh as tears roll down your cheek then you nodded at him. "AJ....we're so sorry. For everything." You said to him. "I know where we'll go. We'll go find ourselves a new home. Together. And (y/n) and I will never leave you again." Clem said to him as AJ looks up at him.

Clem reaches out and places his hand on the gearshift when AJ leans forward and places his hand over Clem's. The two boys look at each then Clem smiles at AJ. AJ removes his hand off of Clem's hand then sits back up then turns and leans against you. You wrap your arms around him and hug him as Clem shifts the car in reverse and the three of you get out of the Ranch and leave it all behind, heading off to go find a new home.
