Opposing- Banning The Keeping Of Animals As Pets

(1 MIN)

Ladies and Gentlemen, fellow debaters, Mr/Madame Chair,

This house believes that animals should be allowed to be kept as pets.

Today I will be making three very important points. My first point will be about why we shouldn’t get rid of our pets, my second about the backlash of abandoning our pets and thirdly I’ll make a last ditch attempt at swaying you towards our motion, talking about the things our pets give us in return for our affection.

Has anyone else heard of such an absurd motion, as to throw our beloved pets out the door and just forget about them? Surely that’s a bit too harsh! But lets just take a second to fully understand what the proposition is ‘saying’. Lets just imagine that you got your way, I have one question to ask the proposition, what would you do with the millions of domestic animals once you have ‘set them free to roam their natural habitat’? There are loads of domesticated animals and I bet you didn’t know this list includes alpacas, camels and water buffalos. I’m sorry but we have built over their ‘natural home’, leaving them with no where to go! And lets face it, we say these animals are better off away from us but they won’t be without us if they are grazing in our back yards. Personally I wouldn’t want a water buffalo in my garden any way. They would have no where to go, they are better off with us!

My second point is that we say we are giving these animals back their lives by making sure these animals aren’t reliant on us but in fact we are making their lives worse! Young children in hundred years time won’t know that these animals roaming the streets aren’t meant to be kicked or hit because they have never grown up with a pet around the house, a pet they show compassion towards. Also leaving them to fend for themselves means they will run around like strays and we have enough of a problem with strays as it is.

My final point, is that these animals would have left already if they didn’t want our company. They aren’t stupid and running away is something they could do but they choose to stay in their warm homes with food and a loving, adoring family that will look after them because they deserve it. You have to understand what the opposition is trying to say. These animals aren’t locked away in our houses, they have got rights and as owners we do think of what’s best for them. One thing every human feels is love. It is something you cannot deny a human being, so why should we deny it to animals. They have the right to be loved! They have the right to be cared for by adoring owners! Mr. Summers, do you want to take that away from these beautiful animals? Clearly you do!

Hundreds of people can say that dogs, cats and birds have saved their lives and as a pet owner, I can’t see a world without my dog. He’s a loyal companion to me.

The proposition might say ‘lets get rid of everyone’s best friend, they’re a financial pain only there to subsidise for our lack of friends’ but it’s our money, we ARE allowed to spend it how we please and we’re a little bit anti-social if a pet helps then surely owning an animal is a good thing. Some peoples lives depend on these pets and if you do end up siding with the proposition, the only thing I can say is that I will NOT be the one who has to say to a little blind child that they can’t go outside because we have banned the keeping of animals and she can’t have a guide dog. I refuse to be the one who takes her future away from her, I refuse to give up my pet. Thank you.
