"Ava...... Nachos?" Miss. Lang said, or more like asked.
I raised my hand hesitantly "Nochez," I heard a few snickers from behind me and sunk lower in my seat, blushing violently. This had to be the worst community service day ever. I had signed up for cleaning the school since it was least likely to get me noticed other than treating old people, but they always pinch my cheeks since I have this face that makes me look 'so much' like their granddaughter. What, with my mousy brown straight hair or maybe it was my eyes that just had to be light blue.
"Yes.... you will be cleaning the music area." Ms. Lang said looking up from her clipboard. I got up and did the usual scurry out of the office. I bumped into someone in my hurry and squeaked out a quick 'sorry' then went on my way.
I continued until I opened the door to my favorite place in school other than the library- the choir room. I let out a deep sigh when I shut the door. I pushed myself off the wooden door and gazed at all the beautiful instruments lined up. I always loved music but lived with the burden of keeping it a secret from my mother. She would hate for me to ruin my life because I didn't focus myself on my academic career.
I sighed and walked over to the supply closet at one corner of the room and took out a broom, spray, rag, and other supplies. I dumped them in a pile on the floor next to the overly smudged black piano. I fished out the rag and spray and put them on the piano before removing the papers on top. But a title caught my eye. A song that made me smile.
I bit my lip and looked around "Maybe just a little." I picked up the sheet music, closed my eyes.... and sang:
"Somewhere over the rainbow
Skies are blue"
And it felt amazing. I mean I know the song is a little.... not what people would usually sing. But it always has that warmth to it that you can't get from some random song that you heard on the radio or something. I didn't think about how maybe my voice might be good but I didn't care, I just loved how well the lyrics would come out if my mouth to make... a voice.
"...Then why then oh why can't I?"
I finished with a smile- until I heard clapping and froze. "That was amazing!" I heard a deep voice say behind me. I turned around to face the most breathtaking guy I've ever seen. I mean he had brownish reddish hair that was messy that was cute, that brushed his green eyes that screamed confidence. He had on a, completely white, t-shirt that was tight in all the right places under a blue and red flannel with tight-but-not-too-tight-that-they-looked-like-girl-jeans blue jeans and red vans to complete the look. I gaped at him; he was gorgeous.
"Uh- um," I didn't know what to say so I just looked down and tucked a stray piece if hair behind my ear "Your not supposed to be here after school hours." I finally said quietly still looking at the semi-dirty floor.
He looked at me for a moment which made me blush as red as his vans. "Oh, um, sorry I was just wondering where Ava Nachos was," my head snapped up and he continued "the lady at the front said that she'll know what to do about signing up for band." that's when I noticed the guitar case slung over his back.
I blushed even harder at the incorrect saying of my last name, again. "Um, I'm Ava Nochez, and sure I can help you get signed in." I walked over to the table on the other side of the room, behind the red haired hunk.
He was still staring at me until I awkwardly coughed. "Oh! Um, s- sorry" I think it was my imagination but I thought saw a pink tint to his perfectly tanned face.
I slipped through and picked up the clipboard and a pen. "Name?" I asked reading the form.
"Kyle Renderson."
