My light brown hair is a mess- more so than it's usual unkempt appearance. Not only that, but my face clearly shows how malnourished and tired I am. My clothes are dirty, far from the color they were the day before we were in this place. My glasses are scratched in many places. At least I can still see. That's more than a lot of others here have.
Actually, I've only seen a few people. Most of them were dead, the others were close to dying. Me and Connor, my best friend, have gone through too many rooms to count. The faceless figures pushing us in and out of the small spaces have been anything but gentle and kind. They don't care. It's as if they're trying to get us killed. But they're getting impatient.
“Faé, this is the longest I've ever seen you look at yourself in a mirror,” Connor joked lightly.
“Well, it's hard to say when I'll ever get the chance to see what I look like again.” I let out a soft sigh and turn away from the mirror, returning to the spot I had been sitting in earlier. Sitting in that spot didn't last long, though. Without thinking twice, I moved closer to Connor and huddled next to him. I hadn't realized it was colder by the wall than in the middle of the room by the mirror. Luckily, he didn't seem to mind. Maybe he was cold too.
I turn my face up to study his appearance. He looked just a weathered as I do, maybe a little less. There was too much dirt caked on his face to be sure which of us was in worse shape.
I jumped slightly as he spoke, having gotten used to be completely surrounded by silence. “You know buddy, this whole mess could be worse. I could be alone right now, but instead I got lucky and those monsters kept us together.”
“Y-yeah. I guess you're right.” Obviously, I hadn't thought about that. I don't know where I am, or why I'm here, but at least I'm not alone.
After a long moment of silence between us, I feel Connor wrap one of his arms comfortingly around my shoulders.
“We'll be okay, and we'll get out of here,” he whispers softly in my ear. I realize that he's being optimistic. That's highly unusual, but I won't question the positivity; we both need it right now.
