An ungodly noise. They can speak. I can't describe it, but the creatures can indeed talk.
“Give up.”
That's what they keep repeating. I don't understand. I already have given up. I gave up quite a few rooms ago. I think back to the room with the mirror. If I looked like hell then, I can't even begin to imagine what I look like now. I probably won't get the chance to know. I shouldn't have spent so much time hating myself- then maybe I could see what Connor sees in me.
“Give up.”
The dark silhouette of the creature moves closer to us. I look away from it.
“One of you. Give up.”
I realize what they want. My version of the ending to the story wasn't correct. We're not those lucky ones who become the exception to the rules. We're not in a book. I glance at Connor, though I can tell he's not looking at me. With great struggle, I push myself up into a sitting position and look back at the dark creatures.
“No. We're not going to give up. You should give up. Neither of us are going to die.” Clearly he had figured it out too.
“Give up.” It points to a wall, in which an open door sat with more bright light beyond it. “Give up. One go, one stay.”
“No,” Connor says with anger. “Neither of us are going to go.” He had to stop. It was only making things worse. I grab his hand, willing him to stop. Connor falls silent and looks at me. I don't need to say anything, he already knows. Of course he does, my eyes give everything away.
