Mix in 1 house:

       1 frightened young man

       1 hungry monstrosity

Let simmer until the mixture comes to a conflict

To this day I do not know what alerted me to the creature’s presence. Perhaps it was the coin jar it accidentally knocked to the ground, or perhaps it was the fact it tripped and slammed its head on the piano I have, or had, in my house. Or perhaps it was the fact the thing couldn’t stop this annoying huffing sound probably the result of a broken nose due to the piano. With the blessing of hindsight I should have noticed each of these.

Truth be told, it was probably my cat, an adorable white fur ball who was more affectionate than most dogs. The little girl, Snow I called her, jumped right on my head. Normally I don’t notice this; she does it all the time. This time, I don’t know, maybe it was a combination of all these things. I got up out of bed, not really awake yet, and reached for my glasses and the flashlight that is always on my headboard. I said a quick prayer and walked from my room.

My room leads to a balcony that looks over the living room and part of the kitchen. I shone my light down there, not really expecting to see anything. I didn’t see anything down there, though the coin jar that was usually on the piano was spilled all over the floor.

“Tiger! You blasted cat!” Tiger was my other cat, and a muscular orange fur ball who was more at home in the barn we had outside than the house. I was just about to go down there to clean up the mess when I recalled that Tiger was out for the night. Then I heard the sound of the coins moving. I looked down, but didn’t notice anything out of place. Still, something was up. I glanced at Snow, she looked about twice her normal size. I hadn’t seen her like that since the neighbor’s dog mistook her for a chew toy. I pointed the flashlight down the steps. “Hello?”

I didn’t notice anything there, but something told me that something was coming up the stairs. On an instinct I lashed out with a kick.

I was not a strong teenager, truth be told I was a wimp then. I still am, my progress has been quite limited. To my surprise, I hit something! Apparently it wasn’t expecting the blow, and fell right down the stairs! I took a step, trying to see what the thing was.

I didn’t know how I missed it. The thing looked like a human crossed with a frog crossed with a viper fish. The term Deep One came to mind, but maybe that’s just an influence of too many H.P. Lovecraft books. Never really got around to reading them, but the summaries are interesting.

The creature, I’m calling it a Depth for now, got up, but seemed confused, Maybe from the repeated blows to the head. Regardless, I ran into my room and locked the door.

       “Snow, we have a problem.”

Snow looked at me with those adorable green eyes of hers. I am not sure if she was asking what could possibly be wrong, or why I hadn’t noticed before. Suddenly the thing kicked the door. I grabbed Snow and hid in the closet. The door was broken down and the depth walked in. I would think that it would have a wet sounding footprint, but the sound was more like someone tapping their fingernails on the floor. I was scared, and I must have squeezed Snow because she let out an angry hiss and scratched me!
