CHAPTER ONE:

A FRESH START

☆━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━☆

Moving to a small town called Forks was never a part of Ruby's plan through life. She had dedicated most of her early teenage years looking for her younger sister who had suddenly disappeared. It was strange. Talking to your sister one moment and then the next, she was gone. Ruby had always blamed herself for that. If she just didn't turn her back or became occupied looking at old vinyls of 80's rock bands, then maybe, just maybe, her sister would still have been with them.

Stepping out of her mother's car, Ruby looked at their new house. It was the average two-story house. A light grey color painted on the walls complemented the white frames around the windows. Dark grey clouds and thunder started to form on the sky as Ruby felt raindrops hitting her shoulders. Pulling her bag out of the backseat of the car, the small blonde headed towards the front door. A few white lilies surrounded the pathway and staircase. Ruby looked at the flowers. Something about them felt familiar to the blonde. And as if from a fairytale, the girl felt a slight spark inside her body. She let out a soft gasp, gaining her mother's attention.

"Why don't you go and see your room, Ruby?" Her mother's voice pulled Ruby out of her thoughts. She looked at her for a split second before walking into the house. "The movers have put your stuff in your room." The petite blonde nodded at her mother before she went up the stairs. The walls inside the house had a creamy white color while the floors were dark grey. Ruby hated it. It was too light and welcoming for her liking. Ruby wasn't one of those who liked to let the light in. She loved the dark. It was calming to her and she felt at peace with it. So when the blonde looked at her room she felt calm.

A dark grey color painted the walls and complimented the black bed by the windows. Behind the bed hung a red tapestry with black detailing. Ruby admired her room. It truly felt like her.

Dropping her bag to the floor, Ruby walked towards the only window in the room. It faced directly into the woods behind the house and for a second the petit girl could have sworn that she saw someone in the forest facing towards her house. However, her thoughts were interrupted by the doorbell ringing. "Mom!" The blonde called out in hopes of her getting the door. Ruby looked out the window towards the forest once more as if hoping to see if she actually saw someone.

When she heard the doorbell go off again, Ruby let out a small growl and stomped out of her room and down the stairs. Reaching for the doorknob and twisting it around so the door opened, the petite blonde faced two strangers she had never seen before. Ruby looked at them. There was a short girl, a little bit taller than Ruby herself, with long brown hair who looked quite uncomfortable starring at the ground. Beside her stood a middle-aged man with a mustache, "Um, hi.. we live just across the road and wanted to welcome you to the neighborhood."

Ruby smirked at how uncomfortable the pair seemed. The brunette girl rubbed her arm at her dad's awkward welcome. She had just arrived in the town the day before and her own welcome had not been any less awkward then it was now.

"Ruby, who's at the door?"

Just like in a movie, her mother approached them just at the right time. "I'm Charlie Swan and this is my daughter Isabella." He reached his hand out as Ruby observed her mother as she shook his hand. "Hale," she told the pair and put an arm around the petite blonde beside her, "And this is Ruby." said girl pursed her lips into a thin line and forced out a smile. She really wasn't a people talker and meeting new people was not a thing that Ruby enjoyed.

"Ah, yes, you're the one who's been transferred to our police department. I'm the chief." Charlie told them with a grin. In the corner of her eye, the petite blonde spotted a red truck in the driveway on the other side of the road where Charlie had told her that they lived. Bella noticed that the blonde was looking at something behind them and followed her gaze. When she saw that Ruby was looking at the truck, the brunette wondered why she had caught an interest in it.

"Is that your truck?" Bella shifted her attention from the truck and towards the girl who had asked the question, "Yeah, it was a welcome home gift from my dad." The brunette tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear as she glanced at the blonde in front of her. "It's nice." Ruby's comment was short and straight to the point. The brunette still didn't know why the girl had taken a liking to the truck, and a part of her wasn't so sure if she would want to know. The blonde gave off a weird vibe that Bella didn't know if it were good or bad and quite frankly, she wasn't sure if she wanted to know the answer to that too.

"Do you maybe.. uhh.. want a ride to school tomorrow?" Ruby looked at the brunette in front of her for a split second, "Yeah, sure."

"Well, we should probably let you girls finish unpacking your stuff so that you'll get settled into the house." The petite blonde nodded her head in agreement. "If you need any help don't hesitate to ask." Ruby glanced at her mother who smiled at the man in front of them. She hadn't seen her mother smile in so long that when she was the look on her mother's face, Ruby felt like she was looking at a stranger. "Thank you, Charlie. We appreciate it." With one final look at the mother-daughter duo, the two brunettes walked back to their house.

Watching them walk away, Ruby felt a strange feeling in her stomach. The same feeling she got when her dad left and her sister disappeared. The blonde shook the feeling off as she turned to walk back inside the house when her eyes caught the flowers by the stairs. The once white lilies that bloomed with life, were now hanging down with petals falling off.  The Hale girl stared at the flowers. How they had suddenly died was a mystery to the girl. However, she didn't give it muvh thought as she closed the door and went back to her room to finish unpacking her boxes.
