I laid in the cold, wet mud tasting it as I struggled to breath. I could see the mangled wreckage of what used to be two cars, but they didn't look like two cars anymore. They looked like one huge pile of twisted metal. I remember flying out of the car, and ending up landing over here, somehow.
At first I just saw hands sticking out of the wreckage, but then I saw it was Nicole as she climbed her way out. Her ears were dripping with blood as it had covered most of her face. Then when she made her way to solid ground she collapsed in the mud, just like I was. I tried my best to say her name, but for some reason I couldn't. Then I heard something I never wanted to hear again. It was sobbing and screaming that was so load and full of pain. It was my mom.
I jolted awake trying to figure out what the dream was about that had scared me so much. I could feel my head spinning like it did when I first woke up in the hospital, which was weird. It hadn't done that until now. I hoping nothing was wrong.
I looked over at the clock a groaned. It read five thirty. I normally got up at six, but I guess I was getting up now to get ready for school. I stretched around trying to wake myself up which made my head stop spinning, thank god.
My huge, fat, orange, striped cat, Shadow, jumped up onto my bed meowing. I didn't get how Shadow did that being so fat, and all. Cats were just flexible. Even though he was a boy my sister insisted on getting him a butterfly collar to wear around his neck. She had this weird belief that butterflies were good luck. Even now, when she is 15, her room is covered from floor to ceiling with butterflies.
"Meow," Shadow meowed again rubbing his head against my arm purring. I had him before the accident, but he was a cat. It was nice, because he wasn't sad I didn't remember him. He was just happy I was okay, and that there was another person to take care of him.
I petted Shadow for a few minutes, and then I grabbed my black sweatpants and a dark blue t-shirt as I headed for the bathroom to take a shower.
When I first got back home I saw a bunch of pictures of Nicole and I on the walls. When I saw a picture of me I just stood there and looked at it. Had I really looked like that once? In the picture I had long, wavy, red hair. It was dyed a darker red, and It looked almost perfect. Now, as I look in the mirror, I could see my hair was now cut up to my shoulder, maybe even a little shorter, from where the doctors had to shave my head to do head surgery. It was sort of messy, but I didn't care. Had I cared before?
I raced down the stairs after I finished getting ready. The only pictures that were missing from the walls now were the ones with my dad in it. Nicole took them down for mom before she got home, and probably for herself too. I wish I could have remember him at least.
As I spun around the corner and into the kitchen mom said, "I think your sister is sleeping in again."
My mom's hair was absolutely beautiful. It was the perfect shade of red, but you could tell in her hair and on her face what the death of dad has done to her.
"Probably," I shrugged. "She always seems to get done on time anyway," I laughed.
My mom gave me a smile, but her face looked sad. Was it because I used to act different when she told me?
She's always so lazy
I gasped at seeing an image pass through my mind. I was at the dinning table saying some bad stuff about my sister, like she's always so lazy. My mom was sitting across from me, eating, nodding her head like she had heard my rants everyday.
"Are you okay, Macy?" Nicole asked as she came up from behind me.
My eyes flickered over to her, "Yeah, what about you?"
She just shook her head as she sat down at the table with me. "Hey mom would there be a reason my ears feel weird and I having trouble hearing out them?" Nicole questioned.
My mom's entire body went ridged, "You know what girls you can skip school today I need to take you to the hospital."
"Mom?" Nicole's frantic voice asked.
She just walked out of the kitchen, grabbing her shoes from the entry way.
"Mom!" I said this time.
Her head snapped up at me and she was on the verge of tears.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"I... I'll explain in the car. Now hurry up," she said as she headed out the door to get the car started.
I looked over at Nicole. Her face was was full of fight. "Come one," I said to Nicole as I grabbed her hand and pulled her out the door with me. Why couldn't mom tell us now?
Even when we got into the car mom kept her mouth shut. She didn't tell use like she said she was going to. And each passing moment Nicole's face became more nervous. All the things that could be going through her mind right now.
Waiting in the emergency room was the longest thing in my life. I could only imagine how it was eating Nicole up inside. I heard each tick of the clock. Each breath I breathed and then finally a nurse called Nicole's name.
Our doctor, Dr. Roth, was already in the room. His face seemed worried, but he was trying to hide it.
"Okay, Nicole, I would like to do a hearing test," he said.
"Okay," she whispered hesitantly.
He sat the earphones on her head as she found a seat. "Okay now when you hear a beep raise your hand. If it's on your left raise your left hand, and if it's on your right raise your right hand."
She nodded her head slowly.
After a few seconds the test was done and the doctor looked over at my mom with a questioning look. Mom nodded her head a little.
"Okay, Nicole, your hearing is below average for someone your age and I'm certain it will keep decreasing. Something happen in the accident that messed up the inner workings of your ears. I estimate you will only have you hearing for 6 more months, but i have to keep monitoring your hearing at least every other week to tell for sure. Your hearing decreasing may slow down in progress or speed up. Though, it is certain you will loose it," said Dr. Roth.
It was so quiet you could only hear our breathing and one sob that mom choked back. I looked over at Nicole. Her face was blank but her eyes swam with turmoil. She slowly slid from her seat and walked to the door, opening it. Then she slowly walked out. As I looked out the door after her she started running in full sprint down the hall. I ran after her.
"Nicole. Macy. Stop!" I heard my mom say from behind me, but I was not going to stop and loose Nicole. Not again.
Nicole took a turn right down the hallway that lead to the front door. I needed to catch up to her. I was older, but she was taller so she kept her distance ahead of me as we ran out the front door.
