Chapter 4: Day 1 Part 2

Mia's POV

Lexi and I have been on the freeway for about 2 hours, without a person in sight. This is really a freaky feeling because you don't know if someone could jump out on you at any moment.

Living in the middle of the east coast it's a little difficult getting to the main city with all the back roads we take.

Seeing a gas station up ahead I tell Lexi to stop by so we could fill up the car and grab a few things out of the store. Taking turns to use the bathroom quick we grab a few snacks to munch on to ease our nerves a little bit. Standing in front of the drink section.

Lexi" Drinking alcohol right now sounds about right," She says with a smile.

Mia" Yeah but we can't afford any distractions right now"

We grabbed a few sodas and a pack of ice to put in a cooler we found inside the store to cool down our drinks. Turning on the car it was now my turn to drive for our final destination. Just as we get on the road Lexi decided to turn back on the radio.

Radio" Mayday Mayday, for anyone that is still coming we are leaving in 2 hours this zone is no longer safe and we have to evacuate. If you make it or not we will be relocating to the base in the camp walker. From the east coast that would be 22 hours away. They will have everything we need to rebuild a new world with advanced technology and our scientist are looking for a cure. a new academy has been established for fighters that will fix this mess. May God be with you all"

Lexi" What?! They can't leave us, can they?"

Mia" I don't think they have a choice"

I feel myself starting to cry thinking about what if we don't make it in time. But I have to be strong so we can both be there before they leave.

Mia" Okay they said they're leaving in 2 hours to be exact, Right?"

Lexi' yeah but that's exactly how far away we are, would we make it?"

I knew she was right, but that's the only hope at the moment we have.

Mia" We have to try, buckle up because were speeding there"

Lexi buckles up and hold tightly onto her seat.

As I'm going 90 miles per hour and trying not to go over anything that might look like it could make our tires pop. We get to the first major city along our way to find cars blocking our way making me and Lexi gasp.

Lexi"How are we going to get through"

Mia" we can't stay here we have to walk until we find a car to get the rest of the way".

Checking my watch I see we only have an hour left before safe zone departs for good. Grabbing a few waters and the backpacks we packed we both got hammers to use as weapons. I tell Lexi

Mia"okay stay close and look at our surrounds because we don't know if those things could appear, got it."

Lexi" I got your back lets just hurry so we can get the hell out of here"

I nod in agreement

It has been 10 minutes since we started walking and still no one in sight.

Lexi" where is everyone, it's quiet"

Mia" Don't know but that's not a good sign.

As we walk past some building that appears to be clothing store we see a big red truck that has been left open with the keys still in the ignition.

Lexi" Hell yeah look Mia that's our ride"

I turn to see, she's right I hear the truck beeping sound. Lexi signs with a sign of relive so do I. As we make our way to the red truck we make sure no one is inside and see a few guns in the back.

Mia" Hell yeah that's what I'm talking about".

We hop in and start the turn when a zombie comes walking with a few buddies behind him.

Mia" Oh shit Lexi look"

Lexi turns around.

Lexi" Fuck put the windows up and lock the doors".

I hope into the driver's seat and turn the truck on.

Mia" Were going to have to run them over that our only way out."

Lexi" Do it."

I feel my hands becoming sweaty, trying to control my nerves for the sake of both of us.

I press the gas pedal and close my eyes after running the first person over and reopening them for the rest of his buddies. I have to see the road in order to not crash our new ride.

Lexi, on the other hand, had her eyes closed and I understand she's scared just like me.

Seeing the rest of the way clear we have exactly 30 mins to get to our destination.

As if the universe was reading my mind I pressed hard on the breaks when I saw a big flash of light and smoke behind us.

Without a second to spare I pressed on the gas pedal and hoped it wouldn't reach us.

Lexi" what the hell is that"

Mia" I don't know but I don't want to find out"

Lexi" Me either"

Will we make it on time.

I hope for our shake we do.
