Chapter 3
I don't know how long I lay in that hospital bed, unable to wake up, all I could hear was the clock ticking and the endless beeping from the ECG.
I'd been here so long that when I looked back on the hours, they blended into each other like broken eggs on a kitchen floor. I was too hysterical to be tired, and a resounding loneliness snaked itself through the silence. Sometimes I believed that it was the hospital that made it worse; all I wanted was to get out of this place and maybe find someone I knew to take care of me.
*...:::::::::::....*
"I think she's ready now," I heard a woman say, she had a light American accent; it was the same voice as I had heard the day before, even though I couldn't see, I could still feel someone sitting closely beside me.
"Wake up Katie," I heard her say- Katie?
"Come on, just try to open your eyes," I tried as hard as I could, but my efforts got me no-where. They had tried to wake me many times before, and at first, I had tried so hard to open my eyes that I swear they could have bled, but now, I felt as if my body had just given up on me.
Sometimes I believed that it would be better if my life just ended now; what was the point in living if I had forgotten who I was? No-one had come into the hospital to visit me; no-one, no friends, no family. Who had I been before, had I just been a nobody without any friends or family? After a few moments of thought, I had decided that maybe it would be better if I didn't find out; sometimes its best not to know the truth.
I started to slowly drift off to sleep again when the woman's voice bought me back to my senses;
"Your parents are waiting for you... make them proud and wake up!"
I felt my heart beat quicken and I took in deep breaths; so I wasn't alone, maybe I did have people out there who would like to look after me. I tried to open my eyes again to make them proud. But nothing happened, I felt my whole body shake, come on, I thought, you can't stay unconscious forever. I wasn't going to make the greatest mistake in my life by giving up. I tried once more.
Before I knew it, my eyes opened slowly, I quickly shut them; the light in the room was blinding, I peered through my eyelids again and tried to adjust them to the brightness of the room. Relief washed over me, I honestly believed that everything was going to be alright now.
My body was too tired to move, but I managed to turn my head slightly to see a thin nurse, with her red hair tied back neatly in a bun. She let out an excited squeal when she realised that I was awake.
"Doctor Philips!" she called, "she's waking up at last!"
I glanced around the cold, sterile hospital room; there was a small window by my bed, but the baby blue curtains were drawn, making it impossible to see through it.
I sighed and tried to move position, the bed was starting to get uncomfortable, and suddenly I felt a huge pain in my back, it felt like a dagger had been stabbed into me. I gasped, my whole body started shaking and my eyes welled up with tears. I bit my tongue so I wouldn't let out a cry of agony; I whimpered slightly as I felt someone take hold of my hand.
My vision was blurred, but through my tears, I saw a tall man in a white suit looming above me; his head was balding, and he wore big, round glasses.
"Water..." I managed to say, to my surprise, the voice I heard was dry and raspy. My throat ached, it was so dry and it felt as if it was on fire.
The nurse quickly scurried out of the room, and the doctor next to me found this as an opportunity to speak to me;
"Hello Katie, my name is Doctor Philips, I've been looking after you while you were here," he held his hand out for me to shake it but my hand felt too numb to move, so I just left it lying on the white blankets.
The doctor looked at me then slowly bought his hand down when he saw that I wasn't going to do anything; there was an awkward silence. I studied his face; he had deep lines in his forehead and the hair he still had was grey, he had high cheekbones and thin lips.
The nurse walked in and handed me a glass of water, despite the resounding pain in my arms, I gladly took the water from her. The cold water felt so good against my sore skin, once I drank all of the water, I looked up at the doctor;
"W-where am I a-and what am I doing here?" I stuttered, my throat still hurt but it wasn't as bad as what it had been like just a few minutes ago.
The nurse looked at me, worry plastered on her face whilst the doctor shook his head slightly;
"Ok Katie, this might come as quite a shock to you, but you have the right to know," he paused, and my heart beat quickened, "you were found on a lonely street corner in one of the bad parts of town, you were bleeding severely and lost a lot of blood. You were pretty beaten up when we took you in."
I let his words sink in.
"We need to know what happened so we can help you... do you think you could tell us?" he asked, and I could hear the hope in his voice.
I shook my head slowly;
"I-I can't remember..." I replied.
The doctor and the nurse exchanged glances;
"Can you remember anything before what happened on that street?" I shook my head sadly, "What about your family and your friends?"
I thought for a moment, and then shook my head no;
"I'm sorry, I don't know who I am, but earlier you said my parents were waiting for me," I paused, and then added in a whisper, "so everything should be ok... won't it?" I looked up at the nurse, who had turned a shade paler, she gulped.
The doctor looked at me in the eyes;
"I'm sorry Katie, we just couldn't wake you up, and we had to think of something... we searched for someone who may know you, but we didn't get anywhere, we couldn't find anyone related to you..." he trailed off.
I felt the colour drain from my face... had I just heard that properly?
