“Alright, Adaline, take a bite.”

Adaline Faith, now exactly 6 months old, was still left living with her grandmother after her father left her 5 months earlier to ‘get a break’.

“Gramma, Addie won’t eat this food!”

Every now and then, Adaline’s 13 year old cousin Amanda would stay at the house to assist in caring for Adaline, since their grandmother was growing weaker and weaker every single day.

“Oh darling did you blow it off to make sure it wouldn’t burn her mouth? She needs to eat something. Let’s see, what kind of food jar did you pick out for her?”

“Umm… Strawberries and Bananas is the flavor.”

Juanita took the jar, brought her glasses to her eyes, and looked over the label.

            “I see the problem now.”

She set it down on the table and picked Adaline up into her arms very carefully. She took a finger and rubbed it on the inside of Adaline’s mouth feeling for teeth.

“She has two in really good on bottom and one on top. Take her in the stroller down the road to Betty’s Diner, and get her something a little bit different to eat. Like, macaroni and cheese or country fried chicken.”

“Oh… Okay gramma but it’s raining outside?”

“That’s okay. Bring an umbrella. She really needs to eat and I don’t feel like driving.”

Amanda sighed and took the child outside with some money their grandmother gave them to eat on. She stuck the money in her pocket and Adaline in the stroller then started walking down the road to the diner at least a mile away.

“Excuse me, girls,” A car pulled up beside Amanda while she was walking farther down the road. A man, who looked to be in his mid-thirties, rolled down the car window.

“It sure is rainy out here, is there anywhere I can give you a ride to?”

Amanda stopped pushing the stroller, already tired and in a bad mood from walking in the pouring down rain.

“We are on our way to the diner right up over that hill,” Amanda pointed up the road to let the man know what she was talking about.

“Oh you know that is just where I was headed!” He smiled towards the two.

“Well, if that’s where you are going too then I don’t see a bit of a problem with it.”

She hesitated before continuing.

“What about my… My cousin’s stroller?”
