—————

You used to have it all. You were born into a wealthy and attractive family and everything was practically handed to you. You surrounded yourself with wealthy and beautiful people, like yourself. But then everything changed on your seventeenth birthday.

You had invited your school's loser as a joke to your birthday party. When you asked her to leave and told her that she didn't belong there, she ran out and everyone laughed including you. But the laughing didn't last long.

That night, the girl's brother visited you and put a spell on you. He cursed you and turned you into what you would call a beast. Ugly scars were all over your face but the most noticeable ones were on both of your cheeks. You were ugly. The boy told you you had a year to find someone to love you or you'd stay like that forever.

After your parents took one look at your face, they pulled you out of school and hired someone to homeschool you. Only one other person knew what you looked like and who you were. And that was your cousin Felix.

"Your parents are hosting a ball tonight," Felix said as he plopped down onto your bed. You nodded your head. You knew they were. It was time for their annual ball. "Are you going?"

You scoffed and adjusted the mask on your face. "I'm not invited to those," you said. "They basically pretend I don't exist. Ever since I got ugly..."

"Shut up, Y/N," Felix said. "You're not ugly."

You rolled your eyes. "I am. No one is gonna love me looking like this," you said.

"You're going to the ball," Felix responded, totally ignoring everything you said. "You need to get out of these walls, Y/N. So you're going. So pick out your best dress and find a mask."

"Fine, whatever."

As the night approached, you found yourself standing beside of Felix. You were dressed in a big ball gown, the skirt being white and puffy and black butterflies adorning the top part. You were holding a black mask over your face and you were feeling antsy as people kept looking at you.

"Do you think anyone will notice me?" You whispered to Felix.

Felix looked at you, blinking a bit. "No?" He looked across the room. "Ah, there's Lee Minho." You followed his gaze to see him looking at a very handsome man, dressed in white just like everybody else.

"Yeah," you started. "And who's he?"

"Prince of Gimpo," Felix informed you quickly. "His family is filthy rich." He looked back at Minho, who was standing with a taller boy. "The taller boy is Bang Chan. Moved from Australia a few years ago to inherit a company."

As you looked at the boy, you noticed he was looking at you. He was across the room but his stare was intense. You adjusted your mask and cleared your throat. "I need to get some air," you told your cousin, who nodded. Then you excused yourself to the balcony.

You were just enjoying the night air when you felt someone staring at you. You lifted your mask to your face and turned around. It was Chan, who was leaning against the pillar.

"May I ask why you're out here by yourself?" He said and you noticed his accent immediately.

"I needed some air," you responded. "Did you follow me?"

"Yes," he nodded his head. "I'm Bang Chan. And you are?"

Does it matter? you asked yourself. If he saw the face under the mask, he'd never want to see it again. "Y/N."

"Ah, well, Y/N. It's very nice to meet you," he said. He lowered his mask and you nearly gasped. He was ridiculously beautiful. Defined jawline, fair skin, plump lips. "Can I see your face?"

"I don't think you want to," you said. "It's not a pretty sight. Trust me." He tilted his head to the side and his brown eyes turned soft. He seemed concerned, curious.

"I believe that every person has beauty," he replied. "But if you're uncomfortable with showing me your face, that's okay. I don't mind."

You couldn't help but smile. It was the slightest of a smile but it was still there. He seemed like such a caring person. And although you had just met him and it would probably be the only time you'd see him, you felt like you could trust him.

You slowly lowered your mask. You took a deep breath as you made eye contact with Chan. He looked at you for a little while, then smiled.

"I've seen a lot worse," he said and took a small step forward. "But for what it's worth, I think you're beautiful."

Your cheeks heated up and you cast your gaze to the ground. It had been a good while since you had been called beautiful or even complimented. Felix didn't matter because he was family.

After that one night, Chan kept coming over to hang out with you. Days turned into weeks and those weeks turned into months. You two talked about everything and you learned so much about him. You never really told him how you became the way you were or even that you were down to your last month before everything was permanent.

You'd be lying if you said you didn't feel something for him. He was kind and considerate. He always knew the right things to say to make you smile. He also made you feel beautiful, which is something you hadn't felt in a long time. You cared for him a lot and you were in love with him. But you were sure he didn't feel the same.

"You seem down," Chan said. He placed his phone facedown on the surface of your desk and turned you around to look at him. He gently grabbed ahold of your mask and pulled it down. "There she is. My beautiful girl."

"Oh, Chan," you ignored your blushing cheeks as they turned bright red. Chan placed his lips against your forehead then brushed your hair out of your face.

"What's wrong?" He asked softly.

"I-I have to tell you something," you started. He looked at you, waiting for you to continue. You took a deep breath as tears filled your eyes. You slowly met his gaze. "I-I'm in love with you, Chan."

He looked taken aback and you thought the absolute worst. But then he smiled and cupped your face in both of his hands. "I love you too, Y/N."

A smile grew onto your lips as Chan wiped your tears away with his thumbs. "You do?" You asked and he nodded. Then he leaned forward and pressed a light peck onto your lips.

"I'm gonna make us something to eat," he said. Then he smiled at you again before heading out of your room. A big smile spread onto your lips and you rushed over to your body mirror.

Your smile faded when you still saw the scars. Tears filled your eyes and started rolling down your cheeks. As you continued to stare at your reflection, you noticed the scars slowly start to vanish. You gasped as your face returned to normal and you gently touched your face with your fingertips.

"Chan! Wait!" You said then rushed after him. Chan was halfway down the hall when he turned around. His eyes widened when he saw that your scars were gone.

"Y/N...your face..." Chan was at a loss for words. He didn't know what to think. You still looked the same but yet you didn't.

You approached him, cupping his face in your hands. Then you stood on your toes and kissed him softly.

"You broke the curse, Chan."

Chan was confused at first. But then he put everything together and a loving smile grew onto his lips. He wrapped his arms around you, picking you up off of the ground and spinning you around. The smile on your face was precious and Chan knew that he'd do anything and everything he could to make you keep smiling.
