In both the comics and the show, we know that every Hargreeves child has a name other than their number. For instance, Number 1 is Luther, Number 2 is Diego, Number 3 is Allison, Number 4 is Klaus, Number 6 is Ben, and Number 7 is Vanya. All but Number 5. In the comics, it seems as though 5 got stuck in time before they were allegedly named. In the show, however, everyone already had a name.
We know this because when 5 does get stuck in the future, he screams, "Vanya! Ben!" Which means that must have been named before.
What really struck me is why he didn't have a name. A friend of mine joked that Grace didn't like him but that wouldn't be true. Grace is literally programmed to take care of the family at all costs. According to Aidan Gallagher, 5 simply didn't want a name. He stated that in a response to some fan's tweet.
What I think is that he was the only one who took Five as a name instead of a rank. You see, as the children grow up, it's obvious to see the competitiveness in Luther and Diego, Number one and two. That rivalry causes them to behave rather stupidly and dislike each other. Luther doesn't hesitate to say, "I'm Number one." Five sees this a lot growing up and doesn't let his "rank" get to his head. Five was fine without a name, he was too mature to need a normal name.
