"I love you, Ember." He pressed his forehead against the door. "Please, let me in."
He had been begging her to let him in. Let him explain his decisions. Ember, however, remained quiet on the other side of the door.
Everything was moving so fast. He was leaving in a few hours and she had no idea about until now. The question was eating her alive.
Why?
Of course, she knew why he was going. He was following his dreams. But why didn't he tell her until now?
Giving in to her curiosity, Ember stood from her crouched position. Her hand held onto the cold metal of the doorknob. Taking a deep breath, she swung the door open.
Cole stumbled forward as his stable post began to move. His eyes traveled down his girlfriend's small frame. He took in everything from her messy hair to her tear stained cheeks to the sweatshirt she had stolen from him the night they met. His guilt was eating him alive. He never meant to hurt her like this.
"Why?" Her voice was raspy from the sobs. Cole tried to reach for her hand, but she yanked it away. She knew that if she let him touch her or if she looked him in the eyes, she would break out into tears again.
A sigh left his lips. He didn't know where to start. "I just didn't know how to tell you."
