Lullaby

"But I want to hear you sing."

Adeline looked at Levi with a blank expression.

"What?"

"I want to hear you sing," he stated, going over to sit on her sofa, looking around her office. She always kept it tidy in the case that Levi would come in, just so he wouldn't murder her or something.

"Me singing? My ass," She dismissed immediately, unimpressed, leaning on her desk.

"Why not?" He asked.
"Why in the first place?" Adeline shot back.
"We all know that you've been out of your head because Erwin's been nagging you to become a squad leader," Levi said to her. "You need to take your mind off everything."

"And you think singing to you is going to help?"

He shrugged.
"I don't know. Even so, I want to hear you sing."
Adeline picked up a pen that was on the desk and began spinning it between her fingers.

"I don't think even Emmerich has heard me sing before," she murmured. Her eyes scanned the floor for a moment.

"I've never been a very musical person. More of a dancer," Adeline said. "I used to learn ballet. It broke me, I ached every day. But that took my mind off of my family life," she explained, stiffening a smile.

"We've both had unpleasant childhoods, it seems," Levi said to her. She looked over to him.
"You need to stop thinking about the past, think happier thoughts."
"Says the guy I haven't seen smile in a long time," she retorted. "And I'm closer with you than anyone else."
"Maybe," he answered. "But if you sing for me..."

Adeline huffed.
"I'm not singing!"

"Why are you so defensive about it?"
"Why do you want to hear it so bad?" She replied coldly. She stood up straight, wincing as she did as her arm had still not completely healed from the last expedition. She walked over to the window at the end of the room, her light footsteps the only thing filling the silence.

Adeline stared out of the window for a good two minutes. Then, she let her light voice come out of her mouth, shaping a sweet melody.

"Tränen fallen, aber sie werden trocknen,
Lassen Sie die Liebe niemals sterben,
Lassen Sie niemals den Schmerz zu Ihnen,
Meine Liebe, Worte können dich nicht verletzen"

Adeline didn't turn around for a while after that, staring at the trees outside.
When she did, all Levi did was look at her. She looked away.

"It was a lullaby that my mum wrote before I was born," she said. "She wrote it along with the sheet of music, so I took it to a friend of mine who knew how to read music, And she taught me it."
"And you still know every word," Levi replied quietly. She folded her arms over her chest, not knowing what to say.

As soon as she heard the slightest crack of the door, her hand launched into her pocket, throwing the knife that she kept in the inside pocket of jer jacket into the wall next to the door frame. It planted itself into the wall.

"You could've killed me," Erwin's voice said as he opened the door fully.
"It would've scared away any unwanted visitors," Adeline stated.
"I'm sure if she wanted it to hit you, it would've," Levi added. Erwin's sighed.
"What are you two doing, anyway? Surely you both have work to be doing."

"With all due respect, Commander, I don't think it is any of your business," Adeline said. "In fact I know it is none of your business."
"I've told you, you don't have to call me 'commander' when there's no one around, Adeline."
"Surely if I can call you Erwin, I'm good enough friends with you that I can call you what I want," she replied, smirking. "And when I'm scolding you, I will call you commander."

She walked over to the knife and wedged it out of the wall.

"Out. Both if you," she said, her expression back to it's usual emotionless state and her pointing with her knife towards the exit. Erwin rolled his eyes and left the room as Adeline slipped the knife back into her pocket.

Levi got up from the sofa and passed her to get to the door. Before he left, he met eyes with her for a second. He then snapped the door shut behind him.
