Chapter 05: The Zombie Ninja

Max was tired. He had woken up in a dream, chased around by clattering skeletons that go “grr”, saved by a trigger happy girl who blows things up, pranked by a little girl who could make fists with the soil and now he was walking through a dimly lit tight and mossy corridor. Even though he had been the strongest mage in all the video games he’d play his whole life, Max was not prepared for this.

He slowed his steps as he felt his foot land on another squish. Ever since the group stepped off the last step, the floor had been littered with a green slime-like thing. It was sticky and mushy and the brownish color reminded him of something he hated a lot; poop.

Max felt a light tap on his shoulder causing him to turn and stare grimly down at the blonde haired girl that had been bothering him for the last ten minutes. He took a mental note to add her to the hate list when he had the chance to.

“What do you want?” He irritably asked.

Emily stared up at him. “Nothing.” She turned her head back to the front, poked Max in the stomach causing him to jerk back and continued walking ahead of him. Max turned towards Cadaver and saw him smile.

“What are you laughing at?”

“Nothing.” He replied waving his hands in the air.

Cadaver was a strange one in Max’s book. Among everyone else, he had the most cuts in his clothes and bruises here and there. The most notable thing Max couldn’t keep his eyes off were the stitches across his face. They split his eyes from the rest of his facial features causing him to look like horizontal two face. Whatever he did to get that; Max didn’t want any part of it.

“So, why do we have to go fight this big skeleton thing again?” Max inquired while walking side by side with Cadaver. Lily had decided that they would go ahead and Emily, Cadaver and he would stick back. He was insulted at first but decided that observing other’s would benefit a newbie like him. Besides, he didn’t know what his power was yet and no one even explained how he’d get to use it. Stupid world didn’t have a tutorial screen.

Cadaver faced Max and smiled again. Max couldn’t keep his eyes of the line that cut through his face.

“Because its the only way for us to get food. Well, good food at least.” Cadaver then noticed that Max just stared at him. He placed his finger on the stitch. “No Max, I didn’t get this from the giant skeleton dude.” He finally said to break Max’s stare. “It was from when I was still alive I think.”

“Uhh what? Were you like a gangster or something?”

Cadaver laughed at Max’s remark. It was soft but genuine. “Nah. I liked doing dares and  stuff. So once, I road my bike around and ice skating rink. I knew it was a bad idea but I didn’t care. I slipped and some idiot left a big piece of broken glass on the ground and it cut through my head.” He paused and watched as Max’s face turn from ‘ouch’ to ‘ew’. “They never understood why there was a piece of glass there but that’s about all that I remember.”

Max started slapping his face in an attempt to remove the mental image Cadaver gave him. “I hate you for that.” He murmured. He turned back towards Cadaver and took a glance at his scar again. Never again was he going to think of the scar as cool.

“But I guess its great that your power’s invincibility. You can go do as many dares and stunts as you want.” He remarked

Cadaver smiled again. “Its not invincibility, just immortality.”

Max accidentally pushed his leg into the mushy ground too deep. He exerted more effort to pull it out and almost stumbled in the process. “There’s a diff?”
